I felt this volume was a bit rushed, not just based on the tone of the writing but also the typos and little errors throughout the book. Not unreadable, mind you; just felt like no one did a final edit before publishing. The epilogue felt tacked on...it was nice to read about the not-so-fairty-tale ending, but it was definitely squashed in there, almost like a loose notebook paper that got stapled in to the back of the novel.
I thought the "world" where the FT characters end up after "dying" on earth at the hands of the Heroes was well thought out. Certainly needed something there, but Bronsky/Fontaine did a nice job and clearly prepared ahead of time. I'm not sure if they plotted the entire series out at the beginning and new that's where they were going, but definitely a solid idea.
I'm glad Bronsky/Fontaine decided to do what they did with Briar Rabbit...I was wondering throughout the series how they'd handle that, as they kept mentioning that he was written to be able to avoid the Corruption. Handled it well, they did. As always, the authors did a nice job switching viewpoints between Alice and Chase and Briar...really gave the story depth and probably made writing it a bit easier, as well, esp the fight scene at the end. Would have been jarring to try to read that from Alice's perspective, considering her mind was probably scattered and jumbled.
I don't think I'm quite the target audience the authors had in mind while writing but I enjoyed the books immensely. Wonderfully imaginative with well fleshed characters, the writing came to life and gave me hours of entertainment.
Whether you've read the Grimm fairy tales or not, you'll enjoy these books.
My only critique is how easy it is to thwart Agnim. Considering his power and the horrific fear he instilled in EVERYONE, he was beaten very easily. It lasted maybe a page and considering the build up I think it was a cop out.
Still, if you love Grimm's fairy tales and like it when they are re imagined, give this series a whirl.
