"Grimm" is a one-of-a-kind show and I'm still grieving NBC's foolish cancellation of it...at least they allowed the show's creators that 13-episode (shortened) last season to wrap up the various story arcs and plots as best they could, but there was no way to do all of that in 13 episodes. ** SPOILER** We wanted so much to see Monroe & Rosalee's triplets born and find out which type of wesen they'd be! Alas, we'll only be able to speculate & imagine. (SIGH)
This review is based on the quality of the product, and not of show itself.
-If I could, I would give the item 3 1/2 stars; due to the quality of the case. The plastic outer sleeve is useful if you wish to keep the product in good condition, however, the plastic is horrible, it may have just been my unfortunate situation; but the plastic case arrived broken and splintered. The actual boxset was in good condition, so I suppose the plastic served a minor purpose.
-The item is glued from its first and final page, the one I have received had started peeling off, and is only being held by about a third of the first page. However, I have not had a chance to open it immediately, and it has been in the mid 90's these last few days in Texas. I can only factor that heat may have had some fault for the adhesive being pulled, however, due to the weight of the pages, I don't believe it to last long.
-Several specks of adhesive had been sprinkled throughout the boxset, however, it did not damage the pages, but I am factoring that heat may have been a factor.
-As mentioned, the faux-leather strip that acts as a tie is horrible. It cheapens the look of the final product, and cannot be tied in the same fashion. It'll certainly be a nuisance when using the product.
-For the final price, which I got at $133; the item did not include a digital copy of the series. As both a traveler and collector, it is conflicting to not receive any digital content especially at the price. Several series have included digital copies, and have had incredible quality; such as the Mad Men Complete Series boxset.
Despite some of those issues (the digital copy is completely subjective to the buyer); the boxset has some offerings.
+The artwork is really quite incredible. Has several shots from the show itself, including some of the lore for the different types of Wesen. What really impressed me was some of the concept art that is spread throughout, however; it did depress me that the actual show didn't reach that level of quality.
+The cardboard sleeves is subjective, however, I found them reasonable. they are not cramped close where the discs have an issue being removed, however, they are more susceptible to falling out, but that would be an issue if you display the product horizontal instead of its vertical native.
The quality of the discs look and sound great. Currently watching some of the deleted features; however, much of this is exactly the same to the individual releases. Overall, the product did disappoint me, but not as much as I expected, I believe this to be a great buy if it can be purchased for $99.99; as several other boxsets have been cheaper, better quality, and included massive amounts of extras and memorabilia.
I hope this may help collectors or viewers to reach a logical conclusion of the product. If you can manage to locate and purchase the individual six seasons; you surely will not be missing much to this boxset.
First, I would like to say, that I will preserve my final judgement on the product on its release. As much of the information has yet to be confirmed or announced, such as inclusion of digital copy for all six seasons, considering the price.
The sound and digital quality of the discs are very much the same from the individual seasons, and the discs are the same from the individual seasons; as for the content on the special features is still yet to be determined.
Now, I would imagine if you are reading this, it is primarily that you are a Grimm Fanatic. So the question for those would be, is it worth getting the entire series? If you have accumulated you collection from the previous purchase, you are getting nothing new; but rather a quick gesture to milk the franchise a bit. If that does not bother you, then by all means: collect on. This complete series of Grimm will be in a digibook, which will give some neat information on the episodes, primarily; their Wesen assailants.
For those just tuning in on Grimm, Wesen are the beastly creatures that prowl the world, and certainly prowl the city of Portland, Oregon. Our leading hero is Nicholas Burkhardt, a Grimm -- also known as the hunter of Wesen. A Grimm is bestowed the ability to see Wesen, whenever they alter their appearance, which for the most part cannot be detected by the average human being. Nick is a Portland police officer, and he is thrusted into the world of ghastly creatures.
Throughout the series, we are introduced to large range of rivals and friends; all whom shape the series through deadly tales and creatures.
The series is certainly not without flaws, with season 5 and 6 on the very bubble of being canceled, were rushed to pursue a storyline that truthfully, had been taking too long to tell. If you are a fan of police procedurals, expect the first couple of seasons to show the duality and compromise Nick has to deal with as both an officer of the law, and hunter of darkness. Fans of fairytales, largely of the macabre nature, through the Grimm brothers, this series will certainly intrigue. With some taking different spins on classic stories like "The Three Little Pigs", "The Pied Piper", or even foreign tales such as "La Llorona (The Weeping Woman)"; you will no doubt enjoy various episodes.
The series is not anything stellar, as some popular shows; but it certainly had character and heart.
- If you are a new fan of the series, truthfully, it may be cheaper to hunt down the individual seasons, which realistically can cost anywhere from 10 to 25 dollars each. Even in the case of each season being $25, you would still save $75, opposed to being the complete collection.
If you are a dedicated fan, and have no seasons on blu ray, this may be worth the investment, or as stated; could be cheaper getting them individually.
I have all current 5 seasons, with season 6 on pre-order as well as the complete collection. I look forward to giving a more accurate review on the product, and to all new fans -- enjoy!
