From the Inside Flap

"There is love, and there is in love. Have you forgotten the difference?"
She sneered at him. "What in the hell do you know about love, you damned iceberg?"
She never even saw him move. One moment, he was three feet away. And then he was only inches away, his long body, so lean and warm, caging hers in against something cool and metal--a car? Truck? She didn't know, didn't care. One hand rested by her shoulder. The other cupped her chin.
"More than you would think, sweet. Far more than you would think." Then his mouth was on hers.
An iceberg.
She thought he was an iceberg.
Little fool.
Her mouth was still under his, for the briefest moment. He knew it wouldn't last long, and he intended to make the most of it. She wanted to wither away and die, did she?
Perhaps she needed to see just how much life she still had inside her.
Oh, but she was sweet...he'd known she would be. Her mouth was soft, even though she was still frozen with shock. Soft, and she tasted like soft, warm woman, cherries and Coke... She lived on Cherry Coke, it seemed. He could live on the taste of it on her, he supposed.
Stroking his tongue along the curve of her lower lip, he teased her lips apart, delving inside the second he had an opportunity. He didn't believe in wasting those.
Her fingers curled into the front of his coat and over the roaring of blood in his ears, he heard the soft, broken sound of her breath...and even sweeter, the erratic beat of her heart. Her body wilted against his--he felt the push of her breasts, the softness of her belly, the long lines of the body she treated so carelessly. There was wanting in her body, needing...she wanted, she needed. Him...she wanted him.
For that moment--he felt it.
And then he felt her fist.
He took that first punch, staggering back a little. Damn, she was strong. When she would have hit him again, he caught her hand, stopping the blow before it landed.
"Don't," he warned quietly.
When he saw the tears in her eyes, though, he wished he'd just let her hit him. Pound him bloody if it made her feel better.
"Why did you do that?" She jerked her hand.
Jacob let go, his heart aching.
Her voice was shaking. Fuck, what had he done?
"Why did you do that?"
"You're not dead, Celine. You need to quit wishing it on yourself."
But he didn't think she even heard him. Celine, with a hand that trembled, touched her mouth. "You kissed me. Damn it, why did you kiss me?"

3.5 good read and series
This is book 6 of the Grimm's Circle series and each book takes a new twist on a fairytale. Now each book can be stand alone, but I find it helpful to read the series in order because of recurring characters and events. In Grimm Tidings we get an interesting take on Jacob from A Christmas Carole. Without giving away too much of the story Celine has become a Grimm, but because of regrets from the past what she really wants is to forget it all. In walks Jacob brought in to train her and help her come to terms with her past.

What I liked about this story is that both characters are kick ass fighters and even though they are both strong physically, emotionally they are weak. There is lots of emotion and angst, but that they work it out together makes it worth the wait for the HEA. The way Ms. Walker weaves in the Jacob and A Christmas Carole with him being Grimm and his powers is very creative and original. I thoroughly enjoyed this story and would recommend this and the whole series.

I must admit that I judged this book by its cover before I ever read it. With such a yummy hottie on the cover all wrapped in chains, I simply couldn't resist. I was pleasantly surprised with this story because it touches on not only my love for a good romance novel, but also my love for classic literature. The story is part of the Grimm's Circle Series and introduces us to a Grimm named Jacob. Grimm's are somewhat like guardian angels. They are technically ghosts; people who have died but are not really dead. They exist to show people the lives that could be, or could have been if they make different choices. Similar to a certain story involving three ghosts showing an old mizer how his choices have impacted those around him and why he needs to change his ways.

Jacob, is given the task of training a new Grimm named Celeste. After suffering a tragic death, she refuses to let go of the life she had and continues to torment the trainers to the point that they simply refuse to work with her. Thinking Jacob will just be another trainer to toss her aside, she continually puts herself in harms way and dwells on her old life when she can. When she takes it a step too far, Jacob decides that it is time to push Celeste to the edge and see if she can finally let go of her past and move on to her future. In doing so, he learns that his feelings for Celeste are becoming too strong to ignore. Can Jacob save her from her own sorrow? When is is finally able to show her what she is capable of, he realizes too late that he may be able to save Celeste from her heartache, but not himself.

This book really took me by surprise. Throughout the story the author throws in hints about Jacob's past life and it kept me curious from beginning to end.

Sometimes, you just have to let the past go, and not worry about what might have been. Celine's biggest problem is that she hasn't been able to let go of what was, so she fights demons as a Grimm for all the wrong reasons. She's worked with almost every available trainer, and Will hasn't found one able to reach her to help her move on. When she's paired with Jacob, will he be the one who can, finally, help her make the break with the past and move on in her new life as a Grimm? Can she finally put the past behind her, and find a new reason to fight and enjoy life once again? Can she find in Jacob what she is so desperately seeking with each new battle-a reason to go on?

I have been a fan of Shiloh Walker's Grimm's Circle series since the very first book, and look forward to each new release. Ms. Walker's world is one that is dark, brooding and filled with danger at every turn. The characters are all too human, with flaws and weaknesses just like the rest of us, with one difference: they are all given second chances to become guardians of the human race as Grimms, guardian angels who fight the demons who would possess humanity and destroy life.

Celine is strong, fast and willing to fight any demon she sees; the more the better. But until she can let go of her old life and the feelings of guilt and failure, she won't be more than a fighting machine, and may even be dangerous to herself and others. She has regrets, and wishes she could settle the problems she had with her husband before her `death' and rebirth as a Grimm. I liked watching as Celine grew and realized she wanted something that would never have been. I enjoyed watching as she waged her battle of will against Jacob, and I liked her ability to accept her new role in life.

3 1/2 stars. "Grimm Tidings" by Shiloh Walker is a novella which is book 6 of her `Grimm's Circle' series that centers around the brave men and women who act as guardian angels for humans and destroy the demons that have entered the mortal world. They can be identified by the mystical silver medallion with upswept wings that each wears. Each Grimm has horrors and baggage from his or her background but most have learned to sublimate their issues and transfer that energy into becoming an expert fighter with the ability to dispatch demons efficiently and serve as guardian angels for the mortals they seek to protect. Jacob is one of the older Grimm and is reluctant to take on the task of working with Celine, a relatively new Grimm who is unwilling or unable to release her former life as a mortal human, to the extent that she has been through an incredible number of trainers. Jacob's talent for showing possible paths of a life often makes him uncomfortable but his attraction to the tormented Grimm in his charge drives him to try to help her heal in any way that he can. His inner demons plus her issues may be just enough to destroy anything they could have if they aren't able to find a way to reach out to each other.

An intriguing glimpse into the lives of some of the Grimm with hints about the backgrounds of several of the secondary characters. There is a bit of jerkiness to the story as the scene suddenly changes in a couple of areas and the ending is a bit abrupt but the characters are engaging and there are plenty of intriguing asides including the link to Dickensian characters. An entertaining quick read.
