The Winston brothers in general are a fun group of characters. Reid does a great job at giving them all their own personality and sense of humor. Jethro is the oldest, but the most troubled of the bunch. Reading about his past and how it shaped it present endeared him to me. His character is strong but flawed, like most of us.
I wasn't sure how I felt about Sienna. On one hand, I loved her spunk. However, I didn't like that her insecurities were the trigger for her spunk. Although, again, I think her insecurities and her reaction to them is the whole point to her character. We get to see her internal struggles, which are very relatable. She isn't a cookie-cutter character, and for that I was glad.
This book was very easy to read. I found myself rooting for these two. I read most of the book with a smile on my face and occasional audible chuckles. I am really kicking myself for waiting so long to read these books. I can't wait to get through the rest of them.
However, the writing is good, the character does feel real (just sad, honestly. I kept wanting there to be a lesson in there about how it's OK to just be you and not hide behind super gross jokes about body parts all. the. time.) and some people may enjoy this book just fine.
Just not me.
1.) Sienna. She is a fantastic heroine. I love that she is confident and funny. She may be referred to as plus size by society but she doesn't let it define her nor does she make apologies for who she is or what size she is. She's not self-deprecating and she's also not ashamed of who she is. She is strong, smart, hilarious and sweet. She is one of my favorite heroines I have ever read and I wish more authors wrote heroines like Sienna.
2.) Jethro. I think Jethro is going to be my favorite Winston brother. I really like that he knows he made mistakes in the past, owned up to them and made things right. He is incredible. He has the sweetest heart, is incredibly sexy and knows how to treat a woman. He is at the top of my list for favorite book boyfriend.
3.) The Winston family. I love the way they interact with each other. I'm super excited to read all their books. I am really intrigued by each of them but in particular Billy. I can't wait to read Billy's book - he's so mysterious.
4.) The humor. There were parts of this book that had me laughing out loud. Sienna is a comedian so I expected some humor but it was even better than I was expecting. The banter was hilarious. This was just a really feel-good kind of book that left me with a huge smile on my face when I was done reading.
5.) The romance. Swoon. The build up to the romance between Jethro and Sienna was magical. Everything from the way they met, the secrets they had, what they were looking for and what they found in each other - it was all very swoony.
So, obviously I loved this book. It's going on my all-time favorites list and it's going on my frequent re-read shelf because I already want to read it again. It's a top pick of 2016 for me with both my favorite heroine and favorite book boyfriend. I would give this book more than 5 stars if I could.

It's when you get such a fine book in your hand that you forget how many books are out there with mean vindictive and manipulative; lying and cheating people...
We know Jethro Winston from [book:Beauty and the Mustache|20359781] and [book:Truth or Beard|23314731]. He is ex-con. He used to be a part of Iron Wraiths Biker Gang and used to steal cars for them in attempt to impress his deplorable father Darell. Jethro rescued himself from his criminal life after some life-altering incidents and is now working with his sister's boyfriend Drew.
Sienna Diaz is a Hollywood A-List comedy celeb who is normal woman in the zero-figure world of movies. She writes and acts in her movies and is very funny. She is in Tennessee for shooting her latest movie and being geographically challenged keeps meeting Jethro who is always travelling up and down the mountains.
It is insta-attraction but is so much fun to read! There is so much to love in this book! JUST GO READ THIS ONE.
Can't wait for Cletus's story...
A plus-size Hollywood actress comes to Tennessee to film her latest film and falls in love with hunky Jethro - a reformed miscreant who has vowed not to have any more flings with women.
The good and the bad:
Although I'm not into romances about celebrities because I prefer to read stories that feel at least halfway plausible (how many film/music stars actually get together with people not in the industry?!), I read Grin and Beard It because it's the next book in the Winston Brothers series after the very enjoyable Truth or Beard. Girl, am I glad I did! Penny Reid has managed to weave a realistic story about an A-lister and a non-celeb!
Comedy film starlet Sienna comes across totally believable as a Hollywood star who loves her job but craves (yet accepts she won't get) a normal personal life. Jethro meanwhile is a regular guy with a dark(ish) past who is trying to live a better life, including not sleeping around anymore. Oh I do love a bit is sexual abstinence to create yummy tension between the protagonists! (Incidentally, this was done knicker-wittingly well in Sarah Maclean's One Good Earl Deserves A Lover.)
Sienna and Jethro initially get plenty of time alone together, to develop their relationship, but I didn't feel that these scenes were especially contrived or unbelievable, so I bought into the story. The book actually deals with how a 'normal' person and a celeb can live with the latter person's spotlight on them, rather than the non-celeb just embracing all the fame.
And for the record, I liked that the celeb in this case was a woman - it isn't a book that feeds into the idea that us female readers crave a man who can give us a life of money and fame.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and immediately read the third in the series afterwards. Having read three of Winston Brothers books now, I strongly advise reading the series in order as it focusses on the siblings in one family and subsequently the novels reveal what has happened in previous books.
Jethro is this strong, bear catching park ranger who has a criminal history, but who also has a big heart! When he stumbles upon a lost and confused woman in the middle of the mountains, Jethro stops to offer assistance! Low and behold, it's non other than Sienna Diaz the A-list celebrity. Jethro hasn't a clue who she is! Slowly they begin to hang out together and feelings develop. On learning Sienna's true identity, their relationship is faced with challenges and more confessions.
Their chemistry is breathtaking!
Cletus!!! Ohhhhh Cletus, I cannot WAIT for his book!!!
“If you don’t fight for what you love, then you have nothing worth losing.”
OMG I officially love Sienna Diaz! Extremely lovable heroines are hard to come by, but this woman seriously stole my heart. Sienna Diaz was totally adorable, seriously hilarious and one of the most lovable heroines I have read about in a long time. Penny Reid delivered a heroine that everyone will love, you just won’t be able to help yourself.
“I’m not a man-eater. I don’t even like giving head usually, my gag reflex is very sensitive. All that hair, I hate hair in my mouth. And it’s the worst kind of hair-”
Grin & Beard It is Jethro Winston’s book. Jethro is our bad boy turned good and is in a perpetual state of regret. His past is something he can never make good but he has spent the past five years reinventing himself into someone his mother would have been proud of and one that his brothers would love. Jethro had been led down the unsavoury path by his dead beat dad who was part of a motorcycle club and fallen into the pitfalls of being in such a club. Theft and meaningless women being the biggest crux of his issues and regret. Jethro has taken a vow of celibacy for the past five years and has vowed to not engage in sexual relations again until he was married…that was until he met Sienna Diaz.
“Billy was the responsible one. Cletus was…well, he’s the odd one. Ashley was the beautiful one. Beau was the charmer. Duane was the quiet one. Roscoe was considered the overachiever, or something like that. And I was the disappointment.”
Now a Park Ranger, Jethro is driving the back roads when he comes across a damsel in distress. Lost, alone, out of gas and at the end of her tether Sienna Diaz was glad for Jethro’s rescue mission, even more so when he had no clue who she was.
“Thanks for being my hero.”
Sienna Diaz was an A list actress and extremely talented romantic comedy writer. Her wit was endless and her bubbly personality totally infectious, she had no filter and often rambled when nervous, but her ramblings were seriously laugh out loud moments. There was nothing about Sienna that I didn’t love. Sienna was curvaceous…not your typical A lister and she was well grounded, down to earth and totally endearing. She had that innate ability to light up the room with her mere presence and turn the sourest of moods to the happiest. She was just adorkable.
“Everything together that makes you impossible to leave, impossible to forget.”
Jethro and Sienna become the firmest of friends and their friendship is one that lit up the pages. From idle chit chat, to coffee, to lifts, to dances, to doughnuts, to just holding each other, these two learned to trust one another first and foremost. Both had trust issues and both overcame them together. The pace of their relationship was perfection as these two discovered one and other from the inside out, that intense slow burn, simmering just beneath the pages was just enough to whet your appetite and frantically will this couple to make it. You felt EVERYTHING, I was frantically page turning, totally consumed from the truly beautiful relationship that Penny Reid expertly delivered.
“Jethro had been the disappointment. I’d been the clown. Individually we had become more. But together and with each other, we didn’t need to be our labels. We were free to be just ourselves.”
The course of true love never runs smooth and these two are going to have more bumps than most. But Penny Reid expertly manoeuvres your feelings and your heart as she totally immerses you in the course of true love that Jethro and Sienna navigate.
“My despondency was borne from already feeling invested in a girl who had a history of not investing.”
I ADORED this book, this is by far my favourite Penny Reid book to date and one that had totally consumed me from start to finish. From tears of laughter, to tears of sadness to tears of joy, Penny Reid expertly wrung out every single emotion from my heart with expert precision. Penny Reid is one extremely funny and talented author. The dialogue was some of the best I have read and that all-consuming intense feeling of family loyalties and friendships was really hammered home. From witty barbs to some of the most heart wrenching and melting quotes my kindle highlighter was on overdrive. I bow down to this woman’s talents because I haven’t enjoyed a romantic comedy this much in a long, long time.
“Yet, until that moment, I’d truly never appreciated how audaciously he carried himself, as though assured of his place as master of the universe, presiding over the kingdom of I-don’t-give-a-****.”
I am now desperate for Cletus’s book, I am not sure who is up next, but these Winston boys are all totally endearing in their own way. I just glad that there are so many of them, because it means we get a lot more books like this one!
“Most people live up or down to the expectations set by their label. Very few people are able to transcend it.”
