This is a PS3 based review.. I don't own an Xbox and I have been mostly playing Battlefield 3 lately.
The reason I ordered these products to try out is that I find the tactile feel of the PS3 controller sticks is lacking and inconsistent. If my hands are dry they feel just ok... Unfortunately my hands get a little sweaty at times and that's when the stock sticks start to feel "squirmy" and imprecise and it has been affecting my gameplay (which needs all the help it can get, honestly).
I have tried both products extensively and greatly prefer the Grip-it's at this time.
The Grip-it's work as advertised... They add a nice layer of tactile feel and all-season grip, are semi-easy to install and maintain the basic convex shape of the stock stick. Measured with a dial caliper, they only add .063" (1.6mm) of height to the stick so the feel is easy to adjust to and the main benefit; they DO improve the feel of control and connectedness to the game if you are already used to the PS3 controller.
The negatives of the Grip-it's: They are a little tricky to install when brand new and "stiff" and might take a couple tries. Once installed they will probably be shifted off-center and if you're anal like me you will want to "work" them into place. Once you have them centered you might notice the edges look a bit uneven and mine have some minor flaws in the silicone molding on the outer edge... Minor cosmetic stuff, just don't look too hard. As for control negatives, the biggest one is that they can rub on the controller at the full travel of stick movement. This causes the stick to drag during circular movements and might be a problem with some games.
They also add a bit of firm give (springiness) to the top of the stick. As a result I have noticed that it seems to require slightly more pressure pushing down to click the stick button, not a problem for me but YMMV.
The CQC is a completely different animal. They clip onto the top of the stick instead of wrapping around. They have a concave top face, and they add significantly more height. Measured with a dial caliper, the tallest point adds .178" (4.5mm) to the stock height and the depression in the face is ~ .060" (1.5mm) deep. The grip surface and compound is excellent quality.
I am not going to give the CQC a negative review because it is a quality product and I can see how many will prefer it if coming from an Xbox controller or just taking the time to adjust. For myself it just feels a bit too foreign in my hands compared to the Grip-it's.
The Grip-it's are also much better value... You get twice as many for half the price compared to the CQC which is manufactured with a more expensive over-molding process.
If you like the basic feel and shape of the PS3 controller and just want to upgrade the feel of the sticks I highly recommend the Grip-It's.
Side-note: I stopped using aluminum thumb sticks and switched to interchangeable thumb sticks (provided by Battle Beaver Customs) around September 2019. The pair I'm using are PS4 OEM style in terms of shape (and using shortest stick option which is a tad higher than stock). After about 9 months of use, the rubber of the thumb sticks themselves still appear like new, i.e. these grips preserved the thumb sticks really well.
Original review:
I just received these and tried them on a few thumb sticks. So far they appear to stay on very well and do not move (or slide). The grip surface is very satisfactory. I recommend these thumb grips.
One thing noticed, is the under edge of them do make light contact with the top of the ring of the controller when installed on PS4 stock thumb sticks. The resulting friction appears to be very minimal/unnoticeable. However, this issue is present with other brand thumb sticks as well.
Regarding wear down, all thumb grips will eventually wear. Even if these wear down more quickly than others they are only $5 for two pairs. I will be testing these out further regarding their longevity.
I decided to combine these with Buwico aluminum thumb sticks. Those sticks are a little taller than PS4 stock.
Another viable option for thumb grips are the GelTabz brand thumb grips.
The idea behind this setup is to have aluminum thumb sticks that will not wear down and not need replacement, but still have a rubber grip. The grips will eventually wear down, but its cheaper and less time consuming to simply replace the thumb grips than it is to keep re-buying and re-installing new thumb sticks altogether. I have tried thumb sticks provided by Battle Beaver Customs which wear down very quickly and I have tried Scuf thumb sticks which lasted a LOT longer, but eventually did rub down and needed replacement (this issue is also present with PS4 stock thumb sticks albeit they do last a lot longer now than they did in the early models).
Top reviews from other countries
The bad: When fitted to a ps4 controller they rub on the controller which renders it useless.
The ugly: You can overcome this by cutting the bottom of the grip but it will become loose and you may have to use superglue, or if you dont want to cut it stuff paper or a shirt button under it to raise it up so it doesnt rub but you have to find the right shape insert or it doesnt feel good.
A bit of a PITA for a supposedly good thumb grips according to other reviews! At least they sent 2 pairs so you can try again if you mess up.
Hard wearing, excellent quality, and highly recommended.
