Cheryl McIntyre has die-hard fans who reads everything she writes, and I understand why: it's the consistency in her authorship. If you crave character-driven, smart, and real love stories of the kind that put your heart through the wringer, then hers are must-reads. Where Dirty was a dark, violent romance treating crimes not often spoken about, Grit picks up and focuses on what happens after that happily-ever-after of the first book. I can count on one hand the dark romances who have gone there - beyond that HEA - to follow the characters' lives without inventing some new adventure to push them into.
"Link's quest for revenge ended in my redemption. Or so I thought. The part I didn't fully understand is that recovery is a process." This is how the first chapter begins. When two permanently scarred humans try to digest their pasts, how do they manage their guilts and fears, meld them with their day-to-day routines? Exactly how strong does their love need to be for them to survive as a couple?
The banter with Link's guy friends at the gym made for a nuanced book. It made me smile, even laugh at times. Then there's the subtle sexiness that is Link himself. His innate protective attitude toward Rocky, and his penchant for what Rocky calls "one of the many perks of working at his gym:" office sex with the boss.
Sometimes, their dialog is masterfully simple, cute, and hot all at once:
"I want you," he husks. "Right here. Right now."
"That's good," I breathe, "because I want to give myself to you. Right here. Right now."
But then with seamless expertise Cheryl brings us back to the essence of what Link and Rocky face: "Life is an ugly and wondrous thing. It beats you to a pulp and rewards you for surviving. Over and over, it's an endless loop of ups and downs. Goods, and bads. Pleasures and pains. Gifts and losses. We power through."
We know Rocky and Link so well by the end of this book. We root for them. We love them. And Grit is easily on my top ten list for 2015.
So, I bought the other four that I was missing and dove in. OMFG! I loved this book! You know you’re reading a great story when it makes you question everything you thought you knew about yourself. I mean, what’s done to Link, his girlfriend Olivia and to Rocky is horrible and I thought they deserved what Link had planned for them, no question. But…. I’m ashamed to say that for a second, just a second, McIntyre had me feeling sorry for a few of the them!
Link is such a tortured man. He has a lot of guilt around what happened to Olivia and I get that, but he really wasn’t to blame for anything. He has carried around this massive load of self hate for four years and I felt bad for Rocky because she has to decide whether she can, or even if she wants to, compete with the ghost of Olivia. I give the woman credit, I’m not sure I’d have tried. How do you compete against someone who is perfect in your lover’s eyes and will never lose that perfection.
This book was definitely a rollercoaster of emotion. Every time I thought that Link and Rocky were going to finally find some happiness, something new would happen. It’s also got a good bit of tension running through it from beginning to end. Link has set himself on a course of action that he feels like he’s honor bound to complete. And you’re kept guessing whether Link is going to ruin the second chance he’s been given with Rocky but you still want him to finish what he started.
Don’t be me! Pick this up! I’m kicking myself for passing this up until now.
Dirty was such a tough series to read. The heartbreaking story of a brutal crime that forces the lone survivor to enact revenge until he meets the woman who would offer a chance to rethink his path. And when a beautiful love blossomed from all the horror, I fell hard for these characters and was satisfied with the hard-fought conclusion.
With Grit, however, we get to revisit Link and Rocky and see how they are faring after that bit of drama came their way, again, and what the future holds for each of them. Together, they are still tip-toeing around their feelings, with Rocky still unsure Link will ever truly let go of the love of his life, Livie. Yet the passion is still burning bright, each being the other's source of comfort, whether in the form of a hug or a quick ride to ecstasy both so strongly desire.
I loved that the author didn't make their unconventional HEA easy. Link and Rocky are both struggling with past events and their road to both redemption and complete happiness is certainly a long one. But that's exactly the way it should be. Theirs is a sacred love, one borne out of mutual need to forget. And now they can have it all but will the past continue to plague their future? Can they really move on? Oh my, I was at loss most of this time around. I honestly didn't know which way the pendulum would swing but was determined to see it through no matter what.
Cheryl McIntyre continues to captivate me with her words and this surprise novel could not have been a better way to start 2016 for me.
I do recommend, however, that you start with the Dirty series which is all in one bundle now, to get the entire story before starting Grit. It will mean more if you do in my opinion.
A huge 5 stars once again for a story that has happily woven it's way into my soul.
