From Kirkus Reviews

A deranged killer comes to New York seeking vengeance in Nuckel’s (The Vig, 2011, etc.) latest thriller. After mob assassin Carla Pugliese easily dispatches men hired to kill her, she decides to target her mobster uncle, who manipulated her into becoming an assassin by exploiting her father’s sexual abuse, and Frank McGinley, a former target whom she believes tried to have her killed. Meanwhile, Frank, a recovering alcoholic, starts a job helping to stop Wall Street crime, unaware of the crazed woman meticulously planning his demise. The author’s taut novel toys with readers’ expectations almost immediately; it opens with Carla as the victim, but as Frank struggles to stay sober and rekindles an old romance, he gradually becomes the story’s protagonist. Carla, however, evolves into a chilling figure as her motivations change from retribution to self-preservation and, ultimately, to pure savagery. In the deftly handled narrative, Carla and Frank are separated for months before finally catching up with each other. Nuckel also discerningly uses the narrative’s 2002 setting, depicting characters who have feelings of guilt about the then-recent 9/11 tragedy. Frank’s first assignment at his new job is to retrieve funds from a man who refuses to pay, and the resulting frank talk about Wall Street trading is neither rife with jargon nor excessively dumbed down; instead, it’s expressed in layman’s terms for intelligent readers. Although not every minor character makes it to the end, any one of them, including Kat, a Colorado cop who tracks Carla to New York, or Brogan, Frank’s sometimes-scary boss, would be welcomed in a sequel. A slow-burning story with a fiery climax that more than lives up to expectations.

About the Author

Personal private equity advisor by day. Writer by night. I've loved reading and writers from a very early age. I always had my nose in a book. I love telling stories and have always had a creative side to me. I used to express it through my music collection. I'm the kind of guy that weeps at a guitar or sax solo. Once I started writing, I knew I would never stop. It just clicked for me. I spend many nights & early mornings writing. I can take readers to places that I have been or have imagined. I have the ability to write descriptions about places or people that I haven't seen or met and later find them to be accurate. I'm unique in that I was raised on the wrong side of the tracks and have known some bad characters. I know their sensibilities and idea of right and wrong. Later in my life I've entered into the world of the wealthy through my business. I know the con man and the business tycoon. I've sat with them and dealt with both sides of the spectrum as an equal. "I read Tender is the Night by Fitzgerald. As always his writing reaffirmed what a hack I am in comparison. Then I can’t compare myself to Willie Mays or the Beatles either." John's Six Word Memoir: “I never gave up my daydream”

After reading Nuckel's first novel, The Vig, I have been waiting patiently for the sequel. GRIT delivers the same fast-paced action I hoped for. While I don't want to spoil the gripping plot, suffice it to say that our hero Frank will eventually meet Carla once again and she's changed for the worse. Creepy and literally blood-thirsty come to mind, yet can't adequately describe the intensity delivered in this sequel. There are a few new characters and plenty of victims to Carla's warped sense of justice. You'll be on the edge of your chair until the last page is turned. I don't usually go for action and suspense novels, so the fact that I couldn't put it down says a lot about the book John Nuckel has delivered. Get it!

John Nuckel's "Grit" picks up where "The Vig", his fine debut novel, left off. Within the first few pages, the time in between reading "The Vig" and starting "Grit" disappeared. It pulled me in that quickly. The vivid characters that are carried over have more dimension to them, and the new characters are equally well crafted. Like them, love them, hate them, it doesn't matter. They make you FEEL something, and that IS what matters.

The plot is fast paced (which seems to a Nuckel hallmark), interesting and frightening. By frightening, I mean in the way Shane Stevens' "By Reason of Insanity" and Steven King's "The Dark Half" (inspired by Shane Stevens) were scary. The make-you-cringe-as-you-read-it-but-you-can't-stop-reading kind of scary.

I don't want to get into the plot. The book's synopsis goes as far as anyone really needs to. But I will say that when I finished the book, I wished I had another Nuckel novel to read. I enjoyed his writing style that much. As far as modern thrillers go, Nuckel's novels are nearing the top of the heap. While he has yet to write a masterpiece, I dare say this latest work of his is a clear indication that he has the ability to do so, and I will read every book he writes in between.

Format: Paperback
The novel starts with the best character, the villain, Carla. Frank is the hero, although it takes a while to find that out. It's an interesting twist, forcing you to start to identify with the villain. It sets you off balance as the story progresses, because it doesn't take too long to find out she's a nutcase. But Frank is, too, and so you begin to wonder what's going on. Then enter Frank's mentor, Brogan, who you aren't sure is really on Frank's side. The plot, or sub-plot, you aren't sure, makes you wonder even more about Brogan's motives. If that's not disconcerting enough, a few unusual other characters drop into the mix to stir it up.

Then it all hits the fan. Peel the blood and bones off the blades and you have yourself a twisted and gory finale. Quite a ride, and certainly not boring. Enjoy.

Grit is like getting slammed in the head with a baseball bat, right from the start. Not much is subtle about it, especially the killing art of Carla, a professional assassin who's out to get Frank, who she had a weakness for and then betrayed her, and her uncle, who manipulated and trained her from her twisted childhood. Phew! It starts off with action and then builds psycho suspense from there as an only gradually suspecting (and kinda clueless) Frank figures out he's at the top of Carla's list for weirdo revenge. And then, slam bang. Read it.
