The story's plot doesn't have much point in that Peter has no agenda other than "don't get caught"' it is rather entertaining though and it is interesting to watch Peter start to see the other side of life when he has to take on other roles to hide his situation. It's not really a romance or an action novel. It's not oozing with new-found facts on the Civil War either. It is just a nice story in which to pass the time. It ends like a second book will be written. Though I didn't absolutely LOVE it, I would definitely read a Part II. Three out of five stars. I received this e-book for free from [...]
The book gives a good view of what it must have been like to live in winter quarters just trying to stay dry and warm. It also comes through that there is always good and bad people on both sides of any conflict. A very interesting look at the Civil War and I look forward to reading the continuing story as they come out. Well done.
My review is not to say that the author is a poor writer. Actually, minus some poor proof reading, the story flows well and the characters do come to life somewhat. If you are a romantic and a person of faith, you will no doubt enjoy this book.
Began reading on October 17th, 2012 up to chapter 9 on page 99.
started reading again on October 19, 2012 at 13:30pm
Just now at 14:49 got to chapter 16. I can't seem to stop reading. I want to read and turn the page to figure out what is coming next. Around 15:00 I had to stop for lunch; famished I was.
Now I resume around 17:05. At around 18:25 I paused on page 249 for a brief rest for my eyes. It is hard enough to tear my eyes off the pages. The pace never slows, the tension builds and I want to read as much as possible.
I cried on page 262;-(
Then tears welled up when he saw and talked to his mother.
Finished reading on October 19, 2012 at 20:50. The second book will reveal his decision on how to stay alive or die with honor.
This book and series is great. Even teenagers in high school should read, digest and contemplate the entirety of its content. Great job Haley!
If you like Civil War era fiction, this book covers many aspects of the battles, the tediousness, the fear, the punishments, and the camaraderie the soldiers experienced. As in her other works, accuracy is paramount to her storytelling style and it shows.
