however that being said and the reason i didnt give it a five star rating was....when i got everything adjusted and ready to go
and did my first test cuts and shut it down it had a shutter in it as it was powering down.....so i thought i must have miss adjusted something
and went over it once more and the same outcome so i inspected the wheels and found that the top wheel had a dent in it that did not happen in shipping as the packaged saw was in perfect shape....it is packed in Styrofoam and it was in perfect shape, which leads me to believe that
it was put on at the mfg like that.... i sent grizzly a picture and they got the amazon rep on it and i had a new wheel in a couple of days...very quick response to my problem ...... that being said i had to do everything over as far as setup and found that i still have a bit of a shutter in the
saw on shut down (not as bad but still there) and at this time i haven't gotten back to Grizzly about this ..... in spite of this the saw cuts perfect and i can live with this issue if i have too.
The wheels on this saw are non coplanar by between 1/8" & 3/16" depending on trim of the top wheel. The lower wheel has to be shimmed but I'll need a gear-puller to get the wheel off the shaft. So I'll have to buy a tool to correct a defect in a new machine.
The upper blade guard is bent and will have to be replaced.
The eccentric cam and cap screw that hold one of the guide bearings were cross threaded during factory assembly. Both will have to be replaced.
The table is not square to the back of the blade by 1/16". This can't be adjusted, this will have to be shimmed to correct this defect.
The vertical travel of the guide post is not parallel to the blade; the spacing of the guide bearings changes as the post moves up and down.
This has been my experience before actually being able to use the saw! We'll see how Grizzly support handles this and I'll update as things progress. Even if they replace all the parts as I expect, I'm still left with a tool that I had to repair out of the box.
UPDATE 11/18/13: After speaking to Grizzly tech support, I've decided to return this item. There are just too many issues that are outside the scope of "normal" assembly adjustments. As usual, Amazon was absolutely painless to deal with. The rep repeatedly apologized for Grizzly's product problems and recommended that I try another unit in case this was a single bad apple. After planning to look elsewhere, I flipped position and agreed to try another one. They'll combine pickup & delivery in one trip. I'll update once the replacement unit is standing upright. Amazon customer service is simply outstanding.
I did receive the replacement unit and there are no defective pieces with this one. However, the wheel alignment is only slightly closer to coplanarity. The travel of the blade guide is still not perfect, but is consistent except for the ends of the range of travel, where the bearings move into the blade. I completed the assembly and did a few test cuts. The machine seems to cut OK in the limited test cuts, but I've seen enough to be confident that this one is a usable machine. I simply have to ignore the specific instructions in the manual that say we must adjust the wheels to be coplanar. I can live with the guide post not being true at the extremes of travel.
Another minor annoyance is the way the table sits on the trunnion; if you tilt the table, it also has a tendency to slide laterally across the trunnion arms. This is tough to describe, but there is no "channel" to hold the table on the pivots as you rotate to change the angle, so it also slides to the side after loosening the lock knobs to incline the table. A slightly raised lip on the outside edge of the pivots would prevent the side-to-side movement. (It's possible to slide into the thin metal pointer that marks the table angle and bend it)
There is only a slight vibration when running, and the 4 pole motor seems strong and overbuilt. Overall fit and finish is very good. This model does not include a work light or a brush on the lower wheel. The fence is solid and easily adjusted.
I'm changing my rating for the second unit to 4 stars; good overall, but not without some issues.
