The jack is made in China, but it was jig welded so fit is excellent (no crooked frames). Welding on the jack itself looks to be MIG with decent welds, but the welding on the guide plates were arc welded and not very pretty. The jack is massive, 3X larger than I thought, with 5/16" thick metal plates, so make sure you have storage space for it. My 230 lb. Honda V-6 tranny is dwarfed by the jack. This thing looks like it can lift engine blocks. Somebody complained earlier about the flimsy chain, but mine looked adequate so maybe Grizzly fixed that.
The platform design for the tranny is ingenious. It seems to have a lot of slop forward and back, and from left to right (around 1" in each direction). The purpose of this is to allow you to jiggle and align the tranny perfectly to the engine block. If the platform was absolutely rigid, it might be hard to mate the tranny to the engine to get the bolts so start. For gross movements to tilt the tranny fore/aft, or from port/starboard, the platform has two metal knobs underneath it welded to adjusting screws.
What's really nice is the swiveling handle and a large hand knob to release the hydraulic pressure. You don't have to raise the handle very far to get the jack to pump, which is important due to limited clearances under the car. This transmission jack replaces a cheap scissors-type jack that I was using, and it was time to splurge.
I used this jack to remove and install a transfer case on a 1998 Dodge Durango 4X4. This was very helpful in removing the transfer case. I used the chain to secure the case to the jack during removal.
The issue (for me anyway) is that the document states that this is only for lowering a transmission. Also, it is long and cumbersome for me; I could not reach the release valve while I was under the vehicle. I had to stretch to reach the valve to lower the transfer case. And, I could not get the angle I need to mount the transfer case to the transmission and had to use a deep socket under the transfer case to tilt the it enough to mount it.
The handle to is awkward. I could not pump it while I was under the car. I had to use a large screw driver as a pump lever to lift the transfer case. And, the caster wheels did not pivot freely making maneuvering and aligning the transfer case challenging.
In hindsight, I think this is a good jack for what it does and I should have got something a little smaller. But, I thank God for this product which has helped me much.
* Huge, wide foot spread, very resistant to tipping (I used this to pull transmissions on a sloped driveway and had no problems)
* Well built. Good welds, solid design.
* High-quality casters
* Comes almost entirely assembled.
* Adjustable tilting platform comes in handy
* Big square area with removable corners means you can use it for other things than just transmissions, like supporting a radiator while you install it, etc.
* Chain could have been longer. I would have paid an extra $1 to make the chain a foot longer.
* Hooks that the chain attaches to are a little wimpy. You may feel better if you install bigger hooks, maybe four instead of two, and with some bigger, longer pieces of chain to use with it. I would definitely want this if I was lifting a bigger transmission (say, 200+ pounds)
A note on shipping:
This shipped UPS, 2-day. It actually took five days, and by the time it got to my front porch, the box looked like UPS had got it here by dragging it across the country tied behind the truck. Several large holes in the box, really beat up, wooden frame inside box had been broken and splintered.
Luckily the box was plastic wrapped, and the loose parts inside were tied down to the wooden board that made the frame of the box, but still. I know it's heavy, but come on UPS, shipping heavy boxes is kind of your job. After 100+ years in business, UPS should be able to handle a 150lb box without beating it halfway to hell and back.
