The come ready to use right out of the box, just fill with potting soil.
This is only my first year with them and I am not sure how they will hold up. Some of the wood is already cracking. I'm not sure how these cracks will play out, but even if these only last 5 years I will still consider them a good investment. I will update as the years go by....
The planter is large and extremely heavy, so rather than ask for a refund and be tasked with returning it, I simply has my handyman make whatever improvements he could. It is functional now, but not without some doing on our part. If you don't have the time or know-how to do minor carpentry repairs, be wary of purchasing this.
The planter is now installed and I will update this review as its functionality becomes more apparent. As for now, it's been a bit disappointing for $200, to be honest.
I didn't like the notion of punching holes in my house siding to prevent tipping so I got a set of 4, 2" L brackets from the hardware store (SS of course) and used them to mount this to my deck.
The included drip irrigation kit is just OK.... even though most of the tubing winds up at the top, I find the bottom tier winds up "muddy", so I might drill some holes to improve drainage. The amount of dirt to fill the unit was close.... 4.5 ft3 is about 135 quarts or 2.5 of the "big bags" of potting soil from the local home store.
