Continuous economic growth is not sustainable because such growth depends on depletion of finite natural resources, ever-increasing debt, continuous population growth, and land use conversion--none of which is sustainable long term. Measuring economic health in gross terms (gross domestic product) is deceptive because it says nothing about the net benefits or costs of economic activity or the impact of economic growth on ecosystems. Yet growth is worshiped like a religion and politicians go to great lengths to lure industry (and people) from other states or countries without any attempt to determine optimum population density. Debt is unethically passed on to future generations.

It is time for governments at all levels to begin planning for a sustainable future that works toward achieving a stable economy and a stable population that is within the long term carrying capacity of supporting ecosystems. The economy is a subset of the ecosystem--not the other way around. The concept of optimum as it applies to human populations needs to be recognized. More is not always better.

Gross Deceptive Product, is easily and quickly read. The author has a knack for communicating complex ecological concepts simply. Our economic system continually promotes growth and is not sustainable as it depletes our natural resources and the very ecosystems that support life. Gross Domestic Product uses growth to measure a robust economy. It is deceptive as it does not debit the ecological side of the balance sheet. We no longer have the luxury of playing politics with the future of our environment but must work toward balance and realistic decisions. Thank you for writing this book and challenging us to take a look at the age old concept that more is better.

Russell England honorably served our country as a combat infantryman in the Vietnam War and then did his best for the next 30 years to protect the planet as a fisheries biologist. This book is a good study of the interrelation between the economy and the environment. As he concludes, "Remember, no matter how much we humans alter our environment or develop our economics, in the long run nature's ecosystem, not the human economy, will determine our fate as a species." Well worth the read. Thought provoking.

We are blessed with resources...but we are not conserving them for future generations. In the name of "progress" we are going deeply into debt to make our country, states, and communities appear to be prosperous, while quality of life and "homeplace" are being degraded daily. The solution is clear. Give up bigger for better.

The author returned home from the Vietnam War to protect the environment as a fisheries biologist. He spent the next 30 years working with the state of Georgia’s Department of Natural Resources. In this book, he speaks eloquently of the perils of unlimited commercial growth to the detriment of the natural environment. He believes government planners should consider the long-range effects upon the environment, regretting that most politicians today tend to look no further than their next election. “We currently have too many politicians and too few statesmen.” While a politician focuses on staying in office, he says, a statesman works to solve problems.

A book ALL should read

Not many of us want to hear the premise of Gross Deceptive Product: “The earth simply does not have the capacity to support all peoples at a living standard comparable to that seen in more wealthy nations.” But like it or not, all economist, politicians, environmentalists, ALL people who share this one earth’s resources should read this book.
The book is well organized and easy to read to introduce a novice in biology/ecology to prerequisites in understanding the principles that explain the book’s premise. Mr. England uses practical examples to explain concepts and add interest.
Kudos to the author for writing this much needed explanation of the relationship of mankind’s perpetual growth and its impact on earth’s resources.

My husband and I read this well written book together, each reading followed by a conversation related to the ideas of the chapter. England reminds us that more is not necessary. He challenges the modern belief that increasing Growth Domestic Product is the only way to sustain a competitive economy. He concludes long overlooked factors, including increasing human population, passing debt to future generations, and depleting natural resources need to be taken seriously.

This book should be considered by book clubs. It would also be appropriate for use by college level economy and ecology classes and for joint seminars between the two disciplines.
