A story of fear and torture so disturbing it's been banned in multiple countries. An unnamed doctor has always had everything he's ever wanted, but that has only made him develop more extreme and depraved needs. He kidnaps a young couple in the prime of t

Controversial films tend to interest me, and "Grotesque" gained my attention when I read it had been banned by the ever-so-tolerant Dutch. J-horror doesn't do it for me in general - I find it culturally alien and often bizarre. Combine this with the fact that some of Japan's most famous (infamous?) horror outings are outrageously violent ("Guinea Pig" series anyone? No thanks!) and I can take them or leave them (mostly leave them). But, in the interests of staying in touch, I took the plunge into this opus of oriental outrage. I'm not sure I should have.
A psychopathic doctor kidnaps two young lovers, transports them in a van to his basement lab as the unsuspecting denizens of J-metropolis go about their business, tortures them insidiously both physically and psychologically, keeps them captive and provides medical assistance so he can torture them some more later. He is a remorseless tormentor, devoid of emotion and disengaged from the wider world. His preoccupation with the banal - the quality of his cream cake, for example - overrides any feelings of concern or empathy for his victims, and he remains entirely unconcerned by the depravity of his actions throughout.
The torture sequences are indeed harrowing and difficult to sit through, and there is an unpleasant sexual overtone to some of it. But despite the film's ominous reputation, not all of the on-screen activity is totally explicit. Shot choices sometimes preclude seeing absolutely everything, which is probably just as well. The impact remains high for the viewer (uncomfortably so), and there is still plenty of material here to alarm the fainthearted. I won't give away the ending, other than to suggest that "He who lives by the sword" (or scalpel, in this case) might also need medical insurance.

Grotesque probably has the largest amount of torture gore I've ever seen in a movie. It's not the most deeply emotionally disturbing movie, there are definitely more unsettling movies out there to keep you up at night. But as far as pushing the limits of decently believable-looking gore, I think this is among the cream of the crop. The acting is pretty good, and if you find torture and gore unsettling then you will probably find it pretty morbidly suspenseful.

Appropriately titled Grotesque is the story of a doctor who kidnaps a young couple to sadistically torture them before brutally killing them slowly for his own pleasure. The effects are painfully realistic, making the film gory, grotesque and difficult to watch at times. The film lacks the horror and suspense of the Hostel films and lacks the humor of Guinea Pig films. Definitely for hard core fans of extreme cinema only. Three stars because it delivers what the title promises but is so grotesque it is difficult to watch.

*NOTE* Amazon's description of this Blu-ray/DVD having an English language track is misleading. There are trailers in English but the movie itself is in Japanese language with English subtitles only.

One creepy flick! What sets it apart from a lot of the others is the sense of realism as you get the thought that something like this could actually happen, and that makes it scary. Believe the the hype on this one. This truly is a victim's worst nightmare.

Okay, it's not easy to write an intelligent review when it comes to 'shock cinema'. But suffice to say that fans of the genre/sub-genre will be satisfied with this effort. The 'doctor' is a truly creepy incarnation that makes the surgeon from 'The Human Centipede' look like a poor Vincent Price imitator.

I love a good horror flick, MANIAC or WOLF CREEK for example. This one, however, is really just unrelenting sadism. The term "snuff porn" comes to mind.

There is no progression of a story. There is no exploration or context. The screen is just drenched with one gory scene after another. The director seems to be asking, "How many sick ways can one human inflict pain and torture on another, without actually killing them?". Anyone can see the final sadistic act coming, from miles away.

UGH.

This was a good one...simple, to the point, and very grotesque. Am not sure what scenes were unrated as that's the version I have, I guess the rated version would not have been good. I mean with a title of "grotesque" I'd want all the blood and gore provided and the unrated does that. A pretty simple plot but a "makes sense" type of plot is what makes this work. A sick in the head Dr. wants to feel excited and in order to do this he has to put a life in the brink of death and show his will to live. Pretty sick stuff but it works. What I really enjoyed about the movie is how in the middle of the movie they get you to believe that this Dr. isn't so bad and you start to get your hopes up for the victims. Really well done.

I watched about 20 minutes and the torture scenes were too gratuitous without any story unfolding. If you are looking for story, stick to Hostel 1 and 2 or the Saw series. Definitely not for children.

Its almost as if the director got a break making a movie living out his sickest torture fantasies. The thing about fantasies is that sometimes they ought to be kept in your mind.

I would suggest Grotesque (Grotesuku) for cult torture fans. Otherwise its not really entertaining and borders or boring (althought i havent finished watching yet).

Note: This DVD was encoded for US and Canada but i can watch it just fine on My Sony DVD player in Malaysia.
