This is a weird movie that's hard to review. It was certainly interesting, and I watched attentively until the very end, but I wouldn't say it's "good." It's sort of like a train wreck that you can't look away from. The acting from the bad guys is goofy and VERY over-the-top, but it's not comical. I wasn't laughing... I just thought it was kind of dumb. The story is decent and fairly unpredictable, but its ultra-serious tones didn't match the ridiculous "punker" villains. It's like two different movies were mashed together, even thought they weren't compatible. If you're looking for a bizarre B-grade flick, this is right up your alley. If you're looking for a campy, fun, "so bad it's good" flick, look elsewhere. (Note: The tail end of the movie is extremely stupid, a bit of nonsensical tacked-on humor to try and lighten the films overly dismal mood... but it was pretty much too little, too late. I don't think anyone's walking away from "Grotesque" feeling cheerful).

This movie has no idea what it wants to be so I guess the director decided to go w/ everything. Starts out as a "modern" 70's horror similar to "Last House on the Left". Then turns into a "Friday the 13th" monster in the woods film. OK. We got the bad guys being chased by the monster and Linda Blair being chased by the bad guys. But then the monster and Linda are killed.
Huh?
After a brief stint as a police procedural before turing into "Death Wish" But not quite "Death Wish". Cause this film has an entirely predictable twist that the Twilight Zone did back in the 60s.
But that ain't it! Finally there's a movie w/in a movie ending that's supposed to be funny, I guess. But they play the joke too long. Otherwise it woulda worked. Maybe.
Linda Blair playa perfectly acceptable Linda Blair. And the lead bad guy actually does and extremely good "poor man's Keifer Sutherland in Lost Boys".
I supposed if you watch this as an anthology, it's passable.

The movie, simply put, is bad. I thought having Blair, the hot “cousin” from Jaws 2, and Doyle Lonnegan’s right hand man from “The Sting,” might make this watchable, but I was wrong. How can actors get worse over time? Anyway, aside from an obvious Burger King brand placement and an early appearance of “B” movie actor Robert Z’dar, I really couldn’t say there’s any redeeming qualities to this film. Two other little tidbits being that Tornatore (the film’s director) makes a cameo by trying to reprise his role as a gun toting good guy (see “The Sting” 1973). The other worthwile piece of trivia in this film is that it marks the final film role of Luana Patten (once played a little girl in the banned 1946 Disney film “Song Of The South”). The ONLY decent thing about this movie is that it was filmed in Big Bear City, which actually looks quiet and not yet overpopulated. The most self aggrandizing edit was the director’s inclusion of a poorly remade ragtime song that was DIRECTLY taken from “The Sting” during the movie’s end credits. What the he*l did I just watch here???

What did this movie want to be? They set up the idea of violent punks breaking into the house of our protagonist (Blair) while she's visiting her family in a remote location. Okay, so far, so good. She has a weird brother who remains in the shadows. Her father dresses up as monsters and makes masks. The punks have already murdered a family (not shown). This has all the ingredients to make a good home invasion/family fights back movie.
But the kills are lame. The bad guys overact. The good guys underact. Blair looks bored even when she's attacked. I think she was just embarrassed. And the revenge kills are mostly below screen so you're unsure what is happening.
I kept wondering how the movie could only be half over when most of the kills had taken place. What would the rest of the movie be about?
Ugh. So people run around in a snowstorm, but no one seems particularly cold. The bad guy ran away from the good guy despite later showing he has a gun and could have shot the unarmed good guy. Then it seems like the surviving punks will return to the house to take on the good guy. Nope.
Then the movie switches courses and turns into a cop drama. These are the dumbest cops ever and I think some of their stupid dialogue is meant to be humorous. Yes, because small town cops often turn into comedians after finding a half dozen murder victims. Oh, and some of the family is missing, but these cops are in no hurry to find them. Then the uncle shows up and becomes the protagonist because Blair is dead (then she isn't dead and then she is dead). I wonder if the actress left the production and they had to rework the ending. So this uncle is dumber than the cops. He doesn't mention his nephew (actually son) exists even when the cops are ready to shoot him. He doesn't mention they've shot his mentally disabled nephew even after everyone is back at the police station. He only says something when the cops finally interrogate him, but he's like "Patrick was the sweetest sweetie ever" even though the audience saw him kill several unarmed people.
Then the final bad guys are interrogated by the dumb cops and more attempt at hilarity ensues. The bad guys easily outwit the cops and are set free because the uncle allowed the cops to think his nephew was the real killer. Then the movie turns into Death Wish in the last 15 minutes. His revenge is meant to be twisted. Finally, there's some meta stupidity at the end because the only thing that was even remotely creepy was the final shot of the punks, so the filmmakers HAD to ruin it.
I love bad B movies, but this was just trash.

So much senseless killing in this movie! It was nonstop. Don’t get attached to anyone if you see this. But I have to say it was entertaining to watch. Yes the budget was very low and the acting was deplorable, but the movie was pretty enjoyable for a cheesy 80s movie. It’s just not a serious movie, if you can accept that, you will be fine. Not bad for a Prime ‘free’ movie. I’ve seen much worse than this.

This is the kind of movie that would be playing on the TV in another horror movie. It's absolutely awful on every level. And yes it has many levels, for some reason. But I watched completely enthralled; It kept finding new and interesting ways to be terrible. The thing that bothers me is I don't know if it's made like this on purpose.
It's certainly worth a look for fans of Horror and B-Movies. It may be bad but it's bad in really weird ways.

"..GOOD FUN CHEESY 80'S MOVIE.."

If you love cheesy 80s horrors like me then this will satisfy you for the most part, the story is fairly original with obvious parts used from other movies but its all good fun, the cast is pretty good obviously the lovely Linda Blair is brilliant as usual and always looks stunning in 80s movies, the punk cast is good even if very over the top acting, there is some violence nothing too bloody though, the story plays out pretty good from the start but the ending did lack a little and Linda Blair was very under used for my liking. Still it fits in well with the other cheesy 80s movies on the shelf; the picture is watchable on this version not great but better than VHS quality, and no features.
