About the Author

Thomas E. Hill Jr. is Kenan Professor of Philosophy at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He has also taught at the University of California at Los Angeles and has held visiting appointments at Stanford University and the University of Minnesota.

He has written widely on ethics and political philosophy. Books published previously include 'Human Welfare and Moral Worth' (2002), 'Respect, Pluralism and Justice: Kantian Perspectives' (2000) and 'Dignity and Practical Reason in Kant's Moral Theory' (1992). Arnulf Zweig currently teaches at Baruch College, City University of New York. He is Professor Emeritus of Philosophy at the University of Oregon and has held visiting appointments at Harvard and M.I.T.

He is the editor and translator of Kant's correspondence and has published articles in the philosophy of law, ethics and the history of philosophy. Books published previously include 'Kant: Correspondence' (1999) and Kant: Philosophical Correspondence, 1759-1799 (1967, 1970).

A bit dry at points, and all in all the language was complex, requiring some thought as to what the author is trying to say. Certainly an excellent read; Kant brings up some excellent points on what morality is, and should be.

Not a translation for a layperson

Professor Wood has produced (so he claims -I don't know German) an extremely literal (faithful) translation of the original. His intent in doing do is "to place the English reader, as far as possible, in the same interpretive position as the German reader of the original." Whatever you think of that philosophy, it results in an extremely difficult text that is of little use to the uninitiated, even for a motivated layperson like myself.

The accompanying essays were interesting, but ultimately not why I bought the book.

I discovered an abundance of core educational value in studying Greek Philosophy through this book. From the first paragraph, let alone the first two pages, I focused on how being able to make decisions and create perspective is essential throughout real life and accurate task completion..This seems to be an advanced text which has more potency than The Prince, in terms of science and systematic ethical judgement at least.
