She quotes great thinkers of the past (Sigmund Freud) and of the present (Wayne Dyer) to inspire us to become better people. This book reminded me that we are each a work in progress and there are always opportunities to grow. She accomplishes this in the chapters which explore many aspects of life such as communication, humor, depression, spirituality, and aggression. While expounding on a topic, she shares her own opinions along with insights gleaned from many diverse figures ranging from jazz legend Charlie Parker to her high school English nun. But, to tell you the truth, I most enjoyed the stories of her own life and family experiences. I liked the clever analogies to gardening like "Destroy the weeds that spoil your life!" I also liked the fact that it didn't have a religious, preachy tone. It didn't have that, "your life stinks because you don't belong to my religion" mind set which is such a turn-off to me in a self help book.
"Grow Yourself a Life You'll Love" is an entertaining mix of philosophy, psychology, personal anecdotes, and common sense. I found it to be so universally appealing and uplifting that I bought it for several people on my Chanukah and Christmas shopping list.
This has to be one of the most sensitive lectures/discussions I have ever encountered. And, it was so timely in my case.
I was reluctant to read this work of art because it appeared to be based on Catholicism. My reluctance was based on having been raised in two different Catholic orphanages in Pennsylvania where I suffered physical, emotional and sexual abuse.
But Barbara's writing made much of that harm go away. Her words are loaded with subtle sensitivity that screams gently and converts doubt to faith.
I cannot wait until I read her other books.
My mission is to live, love and make a difference in this world. With the help of Barbara Garro MA and her wonderful zest for life bubbling from the pages of this book, I feel once again in charge of my mission...
