I found Growing up Hollywood to be like a wonderful roller-coaster ride. It made me laugh, sigh and at times almost shed tears. The presentation was great and I felt as if I were right there with Gracie and Annie, sharing their everyday trials and triumphs.

I would recommend Growing up Hollywood to any of my friends or family but I feel those interested in fairly recent history such as the 1970s and also Hollywood and the west coast in general will especially love this string of short stories with common threads.

I give the book five stars as it was very difficult to put down and very well put together. If there were grammatical errors or typos I didn't spot them.

One of the characters says, "I like to read. I like to read about other people's lives." The writer does a great job of making Hollywood come to life with these stories. It's not the make believe Hollywood, but a real place where life isn't magical like in the movies.

This book shows us the ins and outs, the pleasures and pains, of Hollywood and its denizens. Unlike the other reviewer, who calls it jumbled, Doherty creates a nervous rhythm, a musical beat, that fosters the hope and anxiety of place and the city that leaves us feeling edgy and anxious, like Hollywood, and characters who seem to step to its beat. It is not the fault of the syntax or an inexpert plot or organizational immaturity of the author, but the intention, and expert choice of the novelist. It kept me reading, and caught me feeling born along the tide of the lives of the characters, unwittingly, yet unable to yank a branch of retreat from the river that takes me toward their destiny. The way is bumpy, but it must be so, to be true to the story. To be offended by its telling, is to miss the point entirely.

Who doesn't want to go to Hollywood?

Ok, first of all...everyone knows the title city's magic. This book has the insider scoop. Not only are the characters endearing and broken for such relatable reasons, but this magical land becomes a character all of its own. I loved all the tiny details making me feel like I was right there watching the story unfold in vivid colors. You can envision this" la la land"of dreams the entire world wonders about. The two young girls at the center of the story create their sisterly bond through the ups and downs of their parents relationship. Although, probably not categorized under a comedy, I felt the dysfunction of the relationships to be in the dark humor category, as all families have their problems and the insanity must be laughed at in order to survive. This book is a must read if you want to be taken away to the city of dreams and you can relate to a family that is imperfect, yet wildly entertaining - WHO DOESN'T?

Wonderful insight into Hollywood

Tara writes of a Hollywood of the past and captures the nostalgia as well as the hidden Hollywood. My growing up nearby and spending time at the locations confirm the reality portrayed. I had trouble at times with catching the switch from parents then from older to younger sister, but once caught on was fine. There are editing issues but the unique format makes up for it. A good read for those that remember what Hollywood used to be and in many ways still is and for those wishing to get a rare glimpse into Hollywood from a childhood point of view.

Needs editing

This book needs serious editing. It's jumbled and incohesive. The narrative jumps from the parents' story to the children, and even that switches from the oldest to the youngest with no transition. It would be a decent story if I could follow who is saying what. As it is, it's a rambling story about angry adults and confused children. I liked the cover. Thanks to NetGalley for the advance read.

Interesting look at the "lived-in" Hollywood, not the dream machine. Brings reader back to a time only those who lived there can remember. At the same time the book analyzes the everyday nuclear home and points out how fraught with danger all families can be without evening knowing it. The humor is in reliving all our personal escapes both familial, peer pressure, religious and wanting to be free.
