K. Rashid Nuri had a powerful "burning bush" revelation while a student at Harvard. The experience set him on a global food odyssey, managing agricultural operations in the U.S., Europe, Asia and Africa. Rashid saw, up close, the abuses and inefficiencies of Big Ag. Growing Out Loud is an uncompromising, unapologetic polemic, offering solutions for America's antiquated food system, as well as arguments that demonstrate its failures. Beyond the 360 degrees of food production, the book reveals pains and errors that catalyzed Rashid's intellectual and spiritual growth. Growing Out Loud speaks to the new generation of food revolutionaries about personal and social transformation.

It was so very easy to love K. Rashid Nuri's book, Growing Out Loud, which is his legacy project to his grandchildren and a gift to the world. Growing Out Loud taught me things about him I didn’t know (big things like the trajectory of his life, and little things like our fathers were both born in Corona, New York and we both like jazz and to eat corn raw). It reminded me of things about him that I love (his intellect and focus and passion — I especially love that he named numerous books that were transformative for him, as I now hope to read some of them, too). And it took my breath away with simple truths that I needed to hear again (such as my favorite line in the book, on page 210: We spend a lot of time telling God what we want, instead of listening to what God wants for us). Throughout, Rashid weaves a stunning amount of practical organic growing advice. It is therefore both a memoir and a guide book to roots and revolution. If you are thinking of growing (out loud or not), this book is a must-read.

There are many things I admire about K. Rashid Nuri: his ability to acknowledge his divine purpose early in life, his pulling together his life experiences to deeply explore that purpose, and his moving and building that purpose is most beloved. How he has pulled the various experiences he’s navigated in the world of agriculture, food and community shows the dedication and inner drive born in him to uniquely create his contribution to the world while fulfilling his purpose among us, the community. I’m not a food revolutionary but I am a believer in urban and personal sustainability. The book enhanced my knowledge of what has occurred regarding the sojourns of agriculture over time and continents.
As always songs or phases from songs continuously popped into my thoughts as I read “Growing Out Loud.”
Lord, I am learning to love Thy way for with Thy way I cannot stray. Lord, continue to discipline me. Thy will Thy way. Nothing else matters but that Thy will be done. Thy Will, Thy Way.

My Being Proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit finds joy in God my Savior!

God Bless The Child that’s got his own, that’s got his own.

All this and more makes “Growing Out Lord” a must read book!

This book is a hidden agricultural gem. It’s history, philosophy coupled with agriculture. I dare anyone to read this book and not make some life changes.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I appreciated that Rashid Nuri shared his life so openly shared. I learned so much about what I didn't know about food and the economic and political forces that impact what we eat. I was moved by his personal journey and how he heeded a call from God. In the 1960s and 70s, he was young, brilliant, Black and brave. He had to forge a way when no path was clear to make a reality of his vision. His life speaks so well for our generation, igniting and creating new ways for Blacks and Africans to be reunited in the world. This book reveals a man who built a life of beneficial service and created a legacy for this and future generations. His book reads like the important lessons and stories a father might share with his sons and daughters. This book will be a guide, and for the many children who may grow up without theirs, a surrogate father. In these times, not often do we have the opportunity to hear from educated African American men who still appreciate and honor the land with their labor and gifts. Great job!

Growing Out Loud is a highly engaging account of one man’s innate desire to make a meaningful contribution during his time on this planet. Nuri has given a beautiful testament to the power of education to open eyes, change lives and reclaim our responsibility to the Earth. An Indian saying states that we do not inherit the planet, but rather we borrow it from our children and generations to come. When we consider that civilization as we know it is 6,000 years old, the detrimental consequences of industrialization over only 200 years cannot be overstated. Humans need shelter, water and food for survival. The monocropping practices instilled by the industrial food production complex has had a devastating effect on the very environment that sustains humankind. Rashid Nuri reminds us that our time on this planet is short. His story inspires us to use that time to create powerful change that impacts our communities and our Earth home as a whole.

If you think this is a book about food you’re absolutely wrong. But you’re actually right too! It’s about food but also so much more. This is the story of an incredible life lived, purpose fulfilled and how we can similarly find our own passions. As the author so deftly and eloquently states throughout the book, “there is no culture without agriculture.” There exists in nature the blueprint to solve every single seemingly intractable challenge we are faced with today and, through this powerful memoir, we are taken on journey after journey where this is shown in living color to be true.

Get your this book and don’t just read it; consume it, internalize its nutrients, compost then use it to plant seeds of life. I can’t wait to read it again. Highly recommended!

This book badly needed an experienced editor who would have advised the author to write either about his professional life, or write about his personal life, but not both. He mixed the two to very ill-effect. The women in his life come off as baby incubators who have no dreams, ambitions, or even opinions about the various places Nuri lived, and worked. I couldn't even tell whether they moved with him or not.
Worse, considering all the health problems Nuri now has, either he didn't follow his own prescription for "living well", or he's the poster child for the belief that genetics trumps eating nutritious food, always. To wit: If you inherit longevity genes, you can eat lard and drink whiskey for breakfast everyday and you'll outlive your kale, carrot, beet eating peers everytime, plus have more fun doing it along the way.
