Editorial Reviews

Review

"The beauty of Growing Up Gronk is that you never really have to grow up at all. A fascinating look inside a larger-than-life football family. Enjoy the romp of Growing Up Gronk." -- Dan Shaughnessy, Boston Globe columnist and bestselling author (with Terry Francona) of Francona: the Red Sox Years

"If football is the ultimate American sport, it follows that the Gronkowskis are the ultimate American family. That equation isn’t based merely on their talents—which are extraordinary enough. No, it’s their unbridled exuberance and irreverence that sets them apart. From Gordie Senior on down, they are the Peter Pans of football, men-children who refuse to take themselves or the game too seriously. Anyone who’s spent time around the Brothers Gronkowski will surely agree that Growing Up Gronk captures them in full." -- Jeremy Schaap, ESPN commentator and bestselling author of Cinderella Man and Triumph

They were born, they grew up. Their father made some nice deals on exercise equipment. They started to exercise in eighth grade, as a family tradition -- they played sports and then football, they got hurt. They had fun.

Although there are some interesting tidbits scattered throughout this book -- and I wish my mother had put a freezer full of food stocked for me and Sis when we were in the middle of our baseball practice/growth spurt years -- I found the book to be pleasantly anecdotal, but not inspirational. It's nice to know "how they did it" but it doesn't give much of a message other than -- this is a nice, solid family -- this is how they lived, grew up, played sports.

I bought this for my nephews birthday and he loved it. But it is definitely a book for children and not adults. I read a quote attributed to Wes Welker where he joked that he though it was written in crayon but it does seem like a rush job with not much time or effort put into it.

I received this book from the Vine program and more than likely I would never have purchased the book. It seems more targeted fro children to read. The print though is large, the wording not that difficult and a fast and easy book to read in a short time. This is somewhat the "all American" story of a family that loved sports, that worked hard and overcame setbacks as they worked toward their goals. The book will give you a picture of how the family was raining the boys, how the family got by of a few hundred dollars a week for food when everyone was at home.

This is just a nice little personal book that gives the reader the "rest of the story" and is light and of little real substance. It is just a little fun reading away from those books that contains lot of drama and intrigue,. You won't find that in this book.. This book is not a breaking story worthy of a news clip, but rather a lazy , short, little story about one's family , their trials and tribulations. Read it only if you have nothing else to do for the moment.

I really don’t know why anyone would be particularly interested in this book, unless maybe they are a diehard New England Patriots fan, like me. It is mostly a vanity project for Gordy Gronkowski, the father of five amazing athletes. His five sons have all achieved a great deal of success in sports, with three making to the National Football League, one who played professional baseball, and the youngest is an up and coming star in his own right.

This book talks about how his sons achieved that success. Beyond being naturally gifted athletes Gordy appears to be a somewhat obsessed workout junkie and had his five sons competing with each other in the basement using a workout regime created by Gordy himself. He created five workout junkies in his own image who were motivated by their father but also by their competition with each other. This healthy competition resulted in a clan of professional athletes.

The book also provides some details on what their family life was like growing up and how their incredible mother managed to rein in five Gronks (six if you count the father) and cook and clean and drive them around to all their various sporting events. She is a bit in the background in the book, for the most part, but clearly a hero in her own right.

While the book is not just about Rob Gronkowski he does get more air time here, which is only fair as he is the most successful of the five Gronks. As a tight end for the New England Patriots he’s had a few monster seasons and could potentially be one of the greatest tight ends of all time. Unfortunately, his history of injuries, especially recently, will probably derail that dream. He is described as a bit of a fun loving goofball but a hard worker dedicated to being his best.

When I started to read the book I was enjoying the childhood stories etc but as I went on it kind of felt like a promotion piece. I was glad I read it though. It gave an interesting perspective on an athletic family's life and how important connections are and how hard it is to make it in the professional world if you don't have those connections or are injured. It definitely provides me with conversation topics.

I liked the great insight into the Gronkowski family, their upbringing, the process of learning competitive sports, and the bond and humble nature of all the brothers. A must read for anybody thinking not only about competitive sports but life lessons in any walk of life and what it takes to succeed.

Got to love "The Gronk". We all know that he is a phenomenal football player but he is also known as a Teddy Bear. He has a charity and visits kids in hospitals and partakes in all types of charities to raise money for many places. The Gronk HAS A HEART. This book was very good and it is nice to know about when Gronk was growing up. What a great family he comes from. Everyone should read this book. It is about the All American clean-cut family.

No joke, I'm a die hard Raiders fan. I was born into the Black and Silver back in 78. The Patriots are on a short list of Raiders Killers thanks to the tuck rule. As much animosity as I held against them, I couldn't hate on them after hearing Gronk's story. The Gronkowski family are the epitome of HARDWORK & DEDICATION! I was raised with a similar work ethic and it's encouraging to know that a never quit mind set can and will be rewarded! BTW, They call me Baby Gronk cause I catch everything$$ My favorite part is learning about the tennis ball training. Effening genius Papa Gronk!
