The Grumpy Hero (Phil The Planet Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.0 4.0 out of 5 stars 37 ratings

TJ Brown hoped for a relaxing sophomore year at Hugon University, full of listening to music and school-sanctioned fire breathing. Unfortunately, the evil god Jebisk stole everyone’s music except for TJ’s. This means that unless TJ can get his music files to a monastery on the top of a mountain, Jebisk will become the oppressive dictator he’s always wanted to be.

On the bright side, the mountain isn’t far away. On the not-so-bright side, he only has a few days to get there. And getting there is a perilous endeavor, even for a half-dragon.

TJ, the hero in this somewhat silly fantasy, isn't simply grumpy--he's moreover an altogether different species than human. No, not exactly a dragon, though sort of. But he is a music lover, and he is a student. And you'll find a human or two in the story as well. What's happening on this particular planet, and why is someone paying in gold for tunes? That you'll have to read this amusing adventure to resolve. TJ is worthy of his own book and the novel is a quick and fun diversion for speculative fiction lovers of all ages.

The Grumpy Hero was such a fun, thought-provoking read! I found myself laughing out loud often while reading. TJ is, indeed, a grumpy hero. He's also endearing, amusing, and someone I could relate to (I'd be a grumpy hero too!).

"My only plan was to complain about it..." So honest. So relatable.

I also found myself highlighting passages to reread later because they resonated. One line, in particular, was incredibly powerful and has stuck with me since I first read it.

If you enjoy adventure and shenanigans, The Grumpy Hero is for you. It'll have you laughing out loud and thinking at the same time.

The Grumpy Hero is an absolute blast. It's a well written, smart and hilarious story about a reluctant hero who happens to be a half dragon/human. He has to save the world, much to his chagrin. Not earth, this is a different planet.. named Phil. His destination is a mountain called Huggleface. There are elves, vampires, trolls, pixies, demons, talking bears, gods and monsters in his way. To make things worse, there are humans too.

How are you not already hooked?

Have you ever listened to a toddler tell a story. Yeah, that’s this book. I was lost from page 1 and it didn’t get better. I quit at 10%. Sorry.

One of the funniest books I've read all year! I don't want to give anything away but if you like music, pop culture, or just plain belly laughs then you've found your next read. Mawyer is tight with his prose and utterly brilliant with dialogue.
