Philly native artist PnB Rock, born Rakim Allen, is the next star coming from the city of brotherly love. Meek Mill is arguably one of the most famous artists to emerge from the city regardless of all the drama surrounding his name, but a new generation is coming and that generation is PnB Rock. The rapper-singer released his debut solo album that plays just over 50 minutes, and includes notable features both from other artists and producers collaborating on the record. With the new generation of Hip-Hop having more singing than ever, and every artist nowadays attempting to do so, PnB sure doesn’t wait to get involved in the action. Rock has an underlying mix of styles that play both to his advantage and disadvantage on this album. Releasing three R&B mixtapes that all progress in lyrics, sound, and style, this artist has what it takes to make crossover hits. The rapper-singer uses his knowledge of street rap tendencies and mixes this with an Alt-R&B style that sounds pleasing. His ability to sing without auto tune mostly unlike other Hip-Hop artists sets him a part over his counterparts.
With there only being five other artists on the debut album as features, big names are not short on the list. These artists include names like Wiz Khalifa, YFN Lucci, A-Boogie-Wit-Da-Hoodie, Quavo, and Ty Dolla $ign. As you can tell these features are more guided with verses favoring street rap rather than R&B having Ty Dolla $ign as the only true R&B artist on the list. Because of this, PnB Rock allows himself to be that R&B sound coming out on most of these crossover hits while still entertaining his street rap side on songs like “Range Rover.” Because of his R&B mixtape trilogy background, his sound is prominent and heard on songs like “Hanging up My Jersey” featuring Ty Dolla $ign. What’s good about having a notable list of guest features on a debut solo album like GTTM is that it creates the opportunity for popular songs to emerge having fans of these other artists listen. What really causes trouble for PnB is that he has to try harder to create his own voice and sound and not be overshadowed by these other artists. Because of this he uses the first three songs all as introductions to himself, and then he has his first solo song. Because of this, it makes sense that the track listing order follows a pattern of features in the first chunk and then a gap of singles mixed in with a feature here and there. “Attention” that features Wiz Khalifa is the first song on the album. This song uses “Cabin Fever” Wiz style rap mixed with PnB vocals over a basic beat. This leadoff track does not do the album justice. I believe a stronger song could have met for a better introduction. Even placing the second song “There She Go” featuring YFN Lucci would have been a much better choice. This song uses a catchy beat where PnB sings, raising and dropping his voice, catching the attention of listeners. His chorus on this track sings “Every time she walk by x3… I be like there she go,” and upon first listen you already have these simple lyrics and Rocks voice stuck in your head.
The first solo single on this recording is “Selfish.” PnB sings about a girl, “I’m selfish, I want you all to my self, I swear you don’t need anybody else, I swear I’m selfish.” This song is easily the strongest song on this recording. This is the first test PnB must face going solo on this debut album and he pushes past any doubt that he won’t make it as an artist. This song uses a trap drum fare as the background beat mixed with a piano, keyboard beats, and the soothing voice of PnB. He changes the way his vocals are sung throughout the song with constant dips and holds on certain words that allow for a nice dynamic of Alt-R&B. With this being the focal point of the album, from a sonic view everything revolves around this song and it makes sense being the fourth slot on the track list. With the first four songs out of the way using up three of the five features and the strongest song on the recording, a gap is created that strives to be filled. It’s not until “Notice Me” when this small gap is fixed with a song with strong vocals. He sings for the longing of a girl to notice who he has become and what he has accomplished so far. This song playing immediately after “Range Rover” where he raps about stunting on everyone pulling up in his new whip. The contradiction plays an important role and that it shows his true versatility in music. The last song on this recording, “Stand Back” featuring A boogie wit da Hoodie is a strictly street rap track. PnB raps about “blowing money like it ain’t a thing” and buying materialistic items to show his true rapper side. This song leaves listeners puzzled because this album was equivalent to a love-trap anthem and this song doesn’t fit in with the theme. It’s equal to a terrible ending in a good television series.
Taking a look at the title itself GTTM: Goin Thru the Motions lays out for listeners exactly what is expected on a debut solo album. PnB Rock is first touching down with a crossover album and he has to lay the base work for what’s to come in the future. With there not being too much diversity in sound throughout the album looking in full, it sounds exactly how the title is read. Rock is just going through the motions of making music. In that sense the album delivers what is promised, and listeners should not be disappointed. I expect fully for more diversity to come, but overall fans are pleased with how this recording has came out. I expect the diversity of his lyrics and sound to progress into a prominent figure in this new Hip-Hop era. Philly might have a new big star coming in years to come, and it will be all to the voice of crossover Street-R&B artist PnB Rock.
