Jefferson DeBlanc first saw action at Guadalcanal in the Pacific offensive. He had enlisted in a Marine Corps VMF-112 unit and became a Wildcat Pilot. Aided by a partner, he shot down two Betty bombers his first day. His second day he was promoted to second in command and shot down two fighter planes. He was soon leading his own squadron. Despite his success in the skies, he learned the value of his own life when his plane went down and he was rescued by coast watchers. His price? One sack of rice.

Jefferson J. DeBlanc always had a passion for flying. From the first time he saw a cockpit as a young boy, DeBlanc knew that he could be a great pilot one day. He enrolled in pilot training courses in 1940 at Southwestern Louisiana Institute, which is known today as the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
As World War II broke out across the globe, DeBlanc saw his opportunity to use his talent for flying and serve his country. In The Guadalcanal Air War, he relates his journey from his hometown to his first base in Corpus Christi, Texas, and remembers the vigorous training he endured with his class of cadets.
From the joys of living through another day of combat during the aerial battles of Guadalcanal to the sadness felt with every loss of life, DeBlanc relates the war from an emotional and detailed perspective that is impossible to forget. These are DeBlanc's trials and triumphs during one of the most important battles in the South Pacific.

Jefferson J. DeBlanc was born in Lockport, Louisiana, in 1921 to a family rich in military history. His grandfather fought as a Confederate general in the Civil War, and DeBlanc's own children would serve in Desert Storm.
Driven by a desire to help his country in World War II, DeBlanc joined the Marines and received the rank of second lieutenant in 1942. He became a colonel in 1972. During his service, he was decorated with the Medal of Honor, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Purple Heart, and the Air Medal with four gold stars.
After the war, DeBlanc continued his education at Southwestern Louisiana Institute, now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, and earned a bachelor of science degree in physics and math. He went on to earn a doctorate in education from McNeese State University. DeBlanc died in Lafayette, Louisiana, in 2007.
