The Film is in Black and white, which color would have been better, but they don't mention that when you go to buy them.

Guadalcanal Diary
,
The Gallant Hours
,
With the Old Breed: At Peleliu and Okinawa
I first saw this movie in the theatre as a pre-teen. When I watched it recently as a senior citizen I found that I had remembered large portions of the movie; hence I will have to admit being impressed. Of course as a pre-teen I was well aware of the war although the only inkling I had of what war was like was through the movies. Movies about WWII produced during that war did not in general give an accurate depiction of the brutality of war and the suffering of the servicemen who were in frontline combat. Indeed no one can appreciate what war is like from movies or books.
For a description of what it is like to have been a Marine in combat, I recommend "With The Old Breed" by E.B. Sledge. This book concentrates on describing the conditions that the front line Marines had to live under while fighting and trying to stay alive. Sledge wasn't on Guadalcanal. He fought on Peleliu and Okinawa.
Guadalcanal Diary doesn't depict the conditions as vividly as Sledge portrayed them. However from my understanding of the other reviewers of this movie Guadalcanal in reality was likely just as miserable for those Marines as Peleliu and Okinawa. For a more recent movie about Guadalcanal and from a different perspective, i.e. from the Admiral in overall command - Bull Halsey, see "The Gallant Hours" wherein James Cagney plays Halsey. This movie provides insights not only on the Marines. It includes the problems the Navy had in support of Guadalcanal and the sea battles that developed in defense of the land operations.
About Guadalcanal Diary the movie: It's a really good movie. It does have its battle scenes including the infamous ambush of a group of Marines wherein only one (played by Anthony Quinn) survived. However the concentration in the movie is on the men and how they interacted with each other. Lloyd Nolan and William Bendix are great in a scene where they are attempting to listen to a recap of a World Series game between the Yankees and Cardinals. Of course Bendix is a Dodger fan from Brooklyn (yes boys and girls the Dodgers were originally in Brooklyn). His comeback to Nolan's question on why was he favoring the Yankees is classic. However the most dramatic scene for Bendix is as he sets in a bomb shelter during a Japanese raid and tells how he feels about being there. All the Navy chaplain (played by Preston Foster) can add is "Amen".

Hollywood made a ton of war movies very few of which are any good. Most had two major faults. One was that they were melodramas about a soldiers and their girlfriend before he has to go off to combat. The other was that they were full of propaganda about the American fighting man. This fell into the latter category. It was based upon a book written by a journalist who was with the Marines. When they land on a beach and run into the Japanese it’s called a “deceitful” attack. When the unit is wiped out it’s called a “massacre.” There’s plenty of talk about how the Japanese are inferior. Sometimes the combat saves these films but that doesn’t happen here either.

Guadalcanal Diary Movie. I've watched this movie over the years and still enjoy it very much. A good WWII film worth getting to view anytime.

(Too) loosely based on combat journalist Richard Tregaskis' memoirs, this WWII movie mangles and omits historical facts, names, and details for what? The actual events were far more dramatic and bloody than the watered down narrative in the movie. Nevertheless, despite these flaws, the firm has a strong cast and the movie is reasonably well made, so those people who are ignorant of the real events may not notice or object to its obvious flaws. It's not so much that it's a bad war movie; it's just that it has little to do with Guadalcanal.

Watched for first time in 50 years. This movie maybe has historical inaccuracies in it but it sure looks good to me .William Bendix and Anthony Quinn add to the humor side , The comradiness between the marines and good war scenes permeate throughout. Lloyd Nolan is my favorite sarge. In all one of my favorite ww2 movies especially after just viewing " Retreat , Hell ! " a lackluster Korean war movie.

A classic second world war film
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on October 26, 2020
This film is loosely based on the best selling book by Richard Treghaskis who was assigned as a war correspondent. He landed on Guadalcanal with the first marine division. He was so impressed with the way they fought and cared for each other that is when he wrote the diary. The difference between the book and the film was the names in the film the names were changed so not to upset the next of kin of those that had died. This film was made as morale booster for the people back home they did not want to show actual film of men being killed or dying .There is some external shots that were actually shot on Guadalcanal by marine Corp combat camera men but for most of film was made in studios. The first time actual film made by marine Corp camera men was the award-winning film with marines on Tarawa it was filmed in colour when it was first screened it shocked the American public .That is why these films were made. This film is well made for the period and it as an all star cast
