GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY BY DAN ABNETT & ANDY LANNING collects the following:
Guardians of the Galaxy by Abnett & Lanning: The Complete Collection Volume 1 (issues #1-12)
Guardians of the Galaxy by Abnett & Lanning: The Complete Collection Volume 2 (issues #13-25)
The Thanos Imperative (THANOS IMPERATIVE #1-6, THANOS IMPERATIVE: IGNITION #1 and THANOS IMPERATIVE: DEVASTATION #1)
Annihilators (Only collects the Rocket and Groot sections)
(Please click on the links above for further information as I will not describe all here.)
After the cosmic events ANNIHILATION and ANNIHILATION CONQUEST, Peter Quill Star-Lord decides to reform the Guardians of the Galaxy to be more proactive in the events in protecting the galaxy, so he recruits Gamora, Drax, Groot, and Rocket Raccoon. The additional members include Mantis a psychic and warrior, Quasar with her quantum bands, Cosmo the psychic-talking dog, and probably the most famous member outside of the film: Adam Warlock, the man who stopped Thanos from the INFINITY GAUNTLET story. The group’s main base of operations is Knowhere, a giant head of a dead Celestial. Numerous adventures happen include dealing with the Universal Church of Truth reviving powerful enemies, meeting with future Guardians of the Galaxy 3000, (again) trying to stop the Kree Empire from Earth, fighting themselves (through numerous reasons), putting up with the War of Kings story, get thrown through various places in time and space, and putting up with the return of Thanos for the last time in THE THANOS IMPERATIVE.
So there is a lot of setup and a lot of moving parts that Abnett and Lanning get off their chest, as well as make things reasonable for new readers. DnA's framework for this stuff made the film a big inspiration for the high octane action, humor, and cosmic-level threats to keep readers engaged. Everything that makes a fun team series Abnett and Lanning get here from the team interaction and world building, to the now famous characters like Star-Lord and Rocket Raccoon, yet the more unknown characters get plenty of page time where you’ll care for these characters. Beyond the usual characters and action, there are plenty of big moments that make the series bigger and better with each passing chapter.
Majority of the art is carried by Paul Pelletier, Kev Walker, and Wes Craig doing the main Guardians series, with Miguel Sepulveda doing the Thanos Imperative series, and Timothy Green II doing the Rocket and Groot Annihilators and Earthfall series. It’s all high grade art and matches the cosmic tone of the series greatly.
For this 2016 omnibus, it is typical and true Marvel quality work. Oversized hardcover, sewn binding, high-glossy non-reflective paper, and no gutter loss. The cover is of issue #20 (even with a few font and color changes, it also confusingly enough on the cover of the second trade paperback). The cover itself is a wraparound cover of the team from issue #1. There is about 35 pages of additional stuff most of which is variant covers, some sketches, a 2-page interview about the THANOS IMPERATIVE of writers Abnett and Lanning. Most of these extras here are also found in the original trade paperbacks.
My only grip with this collection is Marvel did not include the ANNIHILATORS and ANNIHILATORS: EARTHFALL main story miniseries. Yes, the Rocket and Groot teamup stuff is collected from those series, but some reason or the next the main cast featuring a new Quasar, Gladiator, Silver Surfer, Beta Ray Bill, and Ronan is not. Now do not get me wrong, what is collected here is awesome stuff under one cover, but since DnA wrote the Annihilators and Earthfall series, and is a spiritual successor to their Guardians work, I’m stumped why not Marvel couldn’t just put those issues in here.
So it comes as no surprise GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY BY ABNETT & LANNING OMNIBUS is cosmic level stuff for the feature films. It’s got action, humor, and plenty of large scale stories worthy of the “Marvel cosmic” title. I just wish Marvel could have included the entire ANNIHILATORS and EARTHFALL stuff. Still, what’s here is great material. I do want to point out paying for this omnibus isn’t much different than the trade paperbacks. Both Guardians of the Galaxy collections are $35 apiece, making $70 for volumes 1 & 2 together; the Thanos Imperative trade paperback is $20 making it $90; and Annihilators paperback (with all the material) is $20 and the Earthfall is out of print and about $20. So it’s about the same price for the trades compared to the omnibus. So what I say is: If you have all the books already, you really do not need this omnibus. If you’re crazy (like me) and have the trades and still want the omnibus, go for it. It’s entirely up to you how you want to spend on.
SN: [[ASIN:1302900277 Guardians of the Galaxy by Brian Michael Bendis Vol. 1 Omnibus is what comes after this. While his run on GOTG isn't bad(his first run anyway. I didn't read his 2nd) it pales in comparison to this DnA's run on GOTG.
