(Though reviews are inherently subjective, I prefer to provide some organization to my opinions through the use of a personal rubric. The following notes may contain spoilers.)
Plot and Setting: 4 -- Plot has unique elements and no major holes, but a few shaky bits and/or a slight lack of focus. Though things like the typhoon and aiding childbirth are plot-device-y, I quite liked the mainly unique aspects of the story. Setting is clear and believable. Timeline may be a bit hard to follow. Before their trip, they mention their first date was 8 months before, which works: July then and March now. But then there's 2 weeks prep, the 2 week trip, and another 2 weeks till their next date -- and, ignoring the intervening month and a half, they still say date 1 was 8 months before. Oops.
Characters: 5 -- Relatable, realistic, interesting, dynamic characters. Than has long been a ladies man. Past experiences (her philandering father, in particular) make Lindsay particularly wary of that type of man. Both Lindsay and Than like to be in control, and the chaos of the Philippines, particularly during the typhoon and its aftermath, forces them to each accept not being in control in different ways. Even minor characters have depth, as do the relationships between characters. Barb is especially important in this one, and we also get glimpses of Than's family and characters from previous books.
Mechanics and Writing: 4 -- A handful of typos, but nothing that seriously hinders understanding. This error: 'if they think that, they have another thing coming.' It makes no sense, though it's a common error. Also always uses the British 'adrenalin' instead of 'adrenaline.' I can work with that one, but not dropping 'of' from a phrase like 'most of the time.' It is written 'most the time' EVERY time in ALL her books, so apparently that's how she says it, but even if it's a regionalism, not all the characters have the same background, so it still doesn't work, and it bugged me. Good use of POV (Than and Lindsay). Generally skillful writing.
Redeeming Value: 5 -- Well-developed, central, uplifting themes. Waiting for God's timing and heeding the Spirit's promptings are strong themes. We also see Than wrestling with the idea of prayer, and what it means when something we pray for specifically doesn’t happen, such as praying for a storm to pass by and instead it grows stronger and heads right toward them. They see how good changes can come out of bad situations. Sex, alcohol, violence, etc, are not glorified at all. Some hints that Than used to have looser standards about sex while dating, but at the time of this story he is already 2 or so years into holding himself to the higher standard of his Christian colleagues.
Personal Enjoyment: 4.5 -- I loved it. Highly enjoyable and very entertaining, with perhaps an issue or two that tempered my pleasure. One I'll definitely read again.
