Buzo's book is a bit dated now (1999) but still is the best primer on the history of North Korea available in english. Even though it does not cover the current regime of Kim Jong Un, it provides excellent background information for understanding the political culture, motivation and strategic goals of North Korea today.

a good primer on North Korean history

Format: Paperback

The author does not make great discoveries (not a part of his intentions), and not always very deep, so book has shortcomings. Nonetheless, this is a very good primer on the North Korean history, with special emphasis on the recent three decades. If one wants to understand North Korea, he or she should start from this book, perhaps together with Suh Dae-suk's Kim Il Sung and Hunter's Kim Il Sung's North Korea. A bit surprised to see that it does not sell as well as it should.
