Written with warmth and humor as a series of letters, this novel is a celebration of the written word in all its guises, and of finding connection in the most surprising ways. “I wonder how the book got to Guernsey? Perhaps there is some sort of secret homing instinct in books that brings them to their perfect readers.” January 1946: London is emerging from the shadow of the Second World War, and writer Juliet Ashton is looking for her next book subject. Who could imagine that she would find it in a letter from a man she’s never met, a native of the island of Guernsey, who has come across her name written inside a book by Charles Lamb…. As Juliet and her new correspondent exchange letters, Juliet is drawn into the world of this man and his friends—and what a wonderfully eccentric world it is. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society—born as a spur-of-the-moment alibi when its members were discovered breaking curfew by the Germans occupying their island—boasts a charming, funny, deeply human cast of characters, from pig farmers to phrenologists, literature lovers all. Juliet begins a remarkable correspondence with the society’s members, learning about their island, their taste in books, and the impact the recent German occupation has had on their lives. Captivated by their stories, she sets sail for Guernsey, and what she finds will change her forever. Written with warmth and humor as a series of letters, this novel is a celebration of the written word in all its guises, and of finding connection in the most surprising ways. (less)

I loved this book. I wasn't expecting to get so emotional, but it sure did hit me in the heart. Just thinking of what the Europeans had to go through during the Nazi regime makes me so very sad. This author sure put it all together for us, to help us understand what went on with the Jews but also if one dared to disagree with the Nazi's what would happen to them. Those men were brutal and I guess I never quite understood everything that went on while they were fighting the war. This book successfully put everything into perspective for me. I loved the history lesson.

I highly recommend this book and will always keep it in my private library to read again and again.

My only sadness it that this author will never write again, but am grateful for her co-author who may inspire us again...thank you!

I love this book. I say love because I read it once a year and enjoy it each time. It's written mostly in letters and is easy to take in bites, but I love it so much I always read so much at a time. I want to live in Guernsey. I want these people to be my friends. Love the characters, the setting and the plot.

I spilled juice on the book I needed for school and told my teacher and I bought her a used like new book and it was in great condition

Not only is this a very good story, the literary device of letters is very well done. I had no idea that the island of Gurnsey had been occupied by Germany during WWII, but now knowing that, the great suffering that went on is no surprise. This is a well told, poignant story of a lot of different types of people who used their difficulties to form a strong community of caring people.

What a treasure of a book. Not being a history buff, I knew nothing of the Guernsey Islands and how World War II invaded the lives of the peaceful families who lived there. The people come alive through an ongoing series of letters between them and the author, and her and her friends and family. It's one of those literary adventures you'll never forget!

I love the story but the book was supposed to be new. It had ballpoint pen marks on the back outside cover and the pages of the book looked like the book had water damage. I wanted it for a gift but there was no way I could give a book in this condition to someone as a gift so I kept it for myself.

I loved this book! It was a slow read at first because it is all letters. It gave me a new view of WW II and made me realize how many people really suffered.
I also like that it had a light side so when it was over I didn't feel like I had been hit by a rock.
