What do you think putting my dog's dinner on it, watching

Warning: some spoilers! This movie is an adaptation of the book, which I absolutely loved. It's a book written in letters and this movie does a very good job of translating the format to film storytelling. Because we don't have five hours to build the chemistry between the two characters who fall in love, it may feel a bit obvious how it ends, but the true story is of an oft-forgotten occupation of the Channel Islands and how even in mainland England, people had no idea what the people of the islands went through. How anyone can call that storyline predictable makes no sense to me. I think they may be missing the point of the story. As one who loved the book, it was a very nice translation into film which does not happen often. I am quite critical of movie adaptations, but this one was lovely and quite enjoyable. I recommend seeing the movie first and then enjoying the lovely detail that is the book after. Either way, I hope others will at least enjoy some version or another.

I recommend this movie very highly. The storyline deals with a part of history that needs to be remembered; what happens when facists take over lives. The story is set in England and the isle of Guernsey, in the aftermath of WWII. The plot centers on an author seeking a story for a magazine article. She receives a letter from a farmer in Guernsey that interests her, so she sets off to visit. She learns about what it was like to have lived under German rule. The experience changes her. The movie is shot in a beautiful part of the world, and viewers get to enjoy that. Romantics will love the movie, and realists will appreciate the historical value of the plot.

Possible spoilers. For those of you who don’t know (I didn’t), Guernsey is part of the Channel Islands in the English Channel. Although closer to mainland France, it is part of the United Kingdom. The movie is mostly set in 1946 London after World War II, but the events leading up to the film’s title and premise is set in 1941 when the island was occupied by the Nazis. The central character is a British author named Juliet Ashton wonderfully played Lily James, last seen in 2017’s Oscar nominated “Darkest Hour” and the action movie, “Baby Driver.”

Juliet receives a letter one day from someone named Dawsey Adams (Michiel Huisman, “Game of Thrones”) who is representing the titled “Society” requesting a specific book called “Selections from Shakespeare” which was a favorite of another member. Although pressured by her editor, Sidney Stark (Matthew Goode), to begin working on another book, Juliet decides to take the boat ride to Guernsey, intrigued by the society and their name. As she is about to board the ship, her boyfriend, U. S. Marine Col. Mark Reynolds (Glen Powell) proposes. She accepts and is given a large diamond ring, which she later removes on the island, sensing it may be offensive to the less well-off population.

Once on the island Juliet meets with the Postmaster, Eben Ramsey (Tom Courtenay) and his young grandson, Eli (Kit Connor) who arrange accommodations at the home of the local busybody, Charlotte Stimple (Bronagh Gallagher). Eventually Juliet meets with the entire “Society” which includes the hunky Dawsey, a pig farmer and guardian of a 5-year old girl named Kit (Florence Keen), Eben, Isola (Katherine Parkinson) and Amelia (Penelope Wilton). Missing is a young woman named Elizabeth McKenna (Jessica Brown Findlay in flashback scenes). Her disappearance is somewhat of a mystery, but it is known that she was arrested by the Nazis. She is also Kit’s mother.

Juliet is met with mixed feelings. Most are surprised she actually came to the island, even though she did bring the requested book with her. Something is amiss and now, rather than read chapters from her book, she is more interested in finding out what the mystery is about and finding Elizabeth. Everyone is reluctant to say much but eventually, she gets to the truth, ingratiating herself to each of the members one-on-one. There are reasons why the members want to keep things quiet, and Juliet wants to honor the memory of Elizabeth even after discovering the truth.

The film is directed by Mike Newell (“Four Weddings and a Funeral) and is available on Netflix. There are some misfires such as when the “Society” members go to the local library to find books and records some years after bombs and mortars destroyed the roof. Even in the elements some books remain intact. And wouldn’t they have been gathered up earlier? While Juliet and Dawsey clearly have chemistry, we are kept at a distance. I suspect the writers (Don Roos, Kevin Hood and Thomas Bezucha) working from Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows novel wanted to keep with mores of the time.

The movie has its heartbreak and will certainly coax a few tears, but it is also funny, a love story, a mystery and in the end a fine film. Recommended.

As always, the movie leaves out bits of the book. But this rendition captured the charm of the novel perfectly. Well cast and beautiful cinematography.

I PURCHASED THE MOVIE THROUGH AMAZON, BUT THERE WAS NO WARNING THAT IT WOULD NOT PLAY ON MY PLAYER THAT WAS MADE IN THE USA. HOW DO I PURCHASE A DVD OF THIS MOVIE THAT IS MADE FOR THE USA? THE DVD I PURCHASED IS PAST THE DEADLINE TO RETURN IT. I CERTAINLY WOULD NOT GIVE THIS EVEN A ONE STAR RATING.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Book and The Film
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 5, 2019
I read the book first, and l watched the film later. As it often happens, the film is very different from the book, but, nevertheless very interesting. The actors are really good and the story is, after all, perfectly credible. But don't try to compare the story of the book with the story of the film. Eventually, I love them both, each one in its own type ! (Please, forgive my possible mistakes : English is not my mother tongue).

5.0 out of 5 stars Magnifique réussite

5.0 out of 5 stars Memories of Guernsey
Reviewed in Australia on March 16, 2019
I lived and worked in Guernsey for five years 1961-66 and my son was born there. A lovely place and somewhere I never expected to visit let alone live.. I left because of my work and being English was restricted as to what property I could purchase. An Island of such history that this film and the book brought back many memories and of meeting people who had survived the war.
