A remarkable tale of the island of Guernsey during the German Occupation, and of a society as extraordinary as its name.“Treat yourself to this book, please - I can’t recommend it highly enough.” (Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat, Pray, Love)“I wonder how the book got to Guernsey? Perhaps there is some sort of secret homing instinct in books that brings them to their perfect readers.” January 1946: London is emerging from the shadow of the Second World War, and writer Juliet Ashton is looking for her next book subject. Who could imagine that she would find it in a letter from a man she’s never met, a native of the island of Guernsey, who has come across her name written inside a book by Charles Lamb.... As Juliet and her new correspondent exchange letters, Juliet is drawn into the world of this man and his friends - and what a wonderfully eccentric world it is. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society - born as a spur-of-the-moment alibi when its members were discovered breaking curfew by the Germans occupying their island - boasts a charming, funny, deeply human cast of characters, from pig farmers to phrenologists, literature lovers all. Juliet begins a remarkable correspondence with the society’s members, learning about their island, their taste in books, and the impact the recent German occupation has had on their lives. Captivated by their stories, she sets sail for Guernsey, and what she finds will change her forever. Written with warmth and humor as a series of letters, this novel is a celebration of the written word in all its guises and of finding connection in the most surprising ways.Praise for The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society“A jewel... Poignant and keenly observed, Guernsey is a small masterpiece about love, war, and the immeasurable sustenance to be found in good books and good friends.” (People)“A book-lover’s delight, an implicit and sometimes explicit paean to all things literary.” (Chicago Sun-Times)“A sparkling epistolary novel radiating wit, lightly worn erudition and written with great assurance and aplomb.” (The Sunday Times [London]) “Cooked perfectly à subtle and elegant in flavour, yet emotionally satisfying to the finish.” (The Times [London])

Wonderful Story!

Wonderful Story!
25th July, 2020Dear Book Club,Yesterday I was rummaging around my bookshelves and found this book. My husband has been after me to watch the movie on Netflix, as he has already seen it and thinks I'll like it. He will watch anything historical or war-related. However, as soon as I heard it was based on a book, I told him I couldn't possibly watch it before reading it! That would be obscene!I didn't even know I had the book. Someone must have given it to me, and I forgot about it. At first, I wasn't sure if I could slough through a book written entirely in the form of personal correspondence, but here I am, less than 24 hours later, already at the end of it! It was--needless to say--very entertaining. And I learned a lot of interesting tidbits about WW2. With all the documentaries my husband watches, I'm surprised there are still things I didn't know!My favorite thought from the book--and I am paraphrasing here since I failed to mark the page--is that "even the Germans couldn't ruin the sea." It is comforting to know that there are things more vast and powerful than the greatest evils man can invent. Don't you agree?Of course, now I have to watch the movie. Will it live up to the book? I'll let you know!Sincerely,AmberPS--I did miss my Kindle app when I had to Google "stalking horse," "ribbon cake," and "third army"!

Where to start ! This book is a gem, the location (the ISLE OF Guernsey ) is a delightful place and even though the story takes us there in a sad time (German occupation during WW2 ) this islands charm cannot be diminished. The characters are perfectly developed and this reader came to love them all. Each one is made so beautifully vivid that I found myself becoming totally immersed in them all and in the complex web of lives lived under war conditions. The book has everything; humor, sadness, suspense and heaps of charm. I loved the format of the lives of the Guernsey Society members being told through letters written by the main character to friends. This style has the affect of creating a degree of intimacy as though the reader is looking over the shoulder of the letter writer and discovering her world while the readers role becomes that of an eavesdropper. One gains a Birdseye view as well of life in Great Britain during the war. Everything we have ever heard or read about the strength and resolve of the British people during their "darkest hour " is epitomized in each of my wonderful new friends who are so skillfully brought to life by Mary Ann Shaffer in this winner book which is also so well written it is a pleasure to read

The Random House Reader’s Circle edition has an additional 80 pages of annotations which makes it really interesting (and has opened my eyes to some of the more hidden atrocities that took place - like all the famous/popular companies that used slave labor during WWII). There’s some very cool info from the authors at the end that provides you with a bit more insight into their own lives. It also includes book club discussion questions, which is perfect since this is the book my book club chose!

The book is written in the form of letters and telegrams to and from Juliet Ashton, her publisher/friend, her best friend from school, a potential love interest, and the Guernsey islanders, as she moves away from her position as a highly popular, humorous wartime columnist to branch out into writing a more serious book on something she’s passionate about, although she’s not quite sure what that is yet. At least, not until a chance letter from Dawsey Adams sparks that passion within her and she’s drawn into Guernsey island life after the German Occupation and the events that unfolded during said Occupation between a group of friends and near-strangers who ultimately grow into the family that none of them knew they needed or wanted.

I was surprised by just how different the movie was from the book, since the movie is what inspired me to pick up the book. The movie takes a lot of liberty with events in the book that really didn’t need it other than to create more cinematic drama, imo. That’s not to say that I didn’t thoroughly enjoy both of them for the lovely creations they are.

Ends abruptly, leaving loose ends and unanswered questions. Overall an enjoyable read, very informative about the unique history of the Channel Islands.

I love books that teach you about events in history you had never even thought about!! I never knew the stories of the occupation of the channel Islands and am now fascinated by this part of the war!!
But I especially love stories that are told through letters!! I loved this story so much!! It was beautifully written and the characters were rich and the story was so sweet but emotionally compelling!! You can tell the author did extensive research on the history of the island!!

It's always interesting to see a film adaptation before reading the book, because if I like the movie I'm pretty sure I'm going to love the book. This was certainly the case here. As always, there was so much more to the story than can be fit into a film, though the filmmakers did a good job of keeping the feel of this book.

I loved the letters between the characters, and the different voices for each. The book really made me wish people still wrote letters, much less interesting letters about their favorite books.

I also appreciated the obscure historical facts scattered throughout. There's certainly enough WWII fiction out there, but I liked reading new"how it felt" facts without having a story be completely based upon the war.

Highly recommended.

This book was delightful! It felt like reading emails from friends! Laugh out loud moments where I least expected it, and also glimpses from the war so harrowing I had to put the book down and walk away. Best of all it had a happy ending! I’ve read it many times and even took a trip to Guernsey myself! I loved it so much I’m going to keep a paper copy on hand.

The Guernsey literary society letters let the reader in on new friendships, loves, fears and the full spectrum of emotions as stories of survival and loss weave an enthralling tale of love. Fantastic read, I could not put it down!

I downloaded this book for an airplane ride and it was the perfect traveling companion. The story is told through letters (which seems annoying but is actually quite engaging). The characters are unique and likable, the language is witty and thoughtful, the story moves quickly and has a good amount of twists and turns. You will also learn a bit of history in the most painless way possible.

5.0 out of 5 stars A magical book, transporting the reader through time & space
Reviewed in Canada on June 22, 2016
The greatest fault this book has is its length - far far too short. One can only hope that greed, avarice, worldwide demand - whatever! - will drive the co-author, Annie Barrows, to channel her aunt's voice once more in a sequel! Or - a prequel? Guernsey leading up to the moment the GL&PPPS is created...I think I would love that even more...perhaps starting as far back as the little child on the road who is met by a man in a carriage.

While the letters skip around some, it keeps it interesting as you never know who will write to Julia next. Each writer has an abundant amount to say about life on the island during the German occupation and how they stayed healthy and sane and fed.
I recommend this read.
