Geridas de dentro dos presídios, as facções criminosas se profissionalizaram. Quem assumiu a dianteira desse processo foi o PCC, responsável por um grau inédito de organização nos presídios brasileiros. Criada em 1993, meses após o Massacre do Carandiru, quando 111 presos foram mortos pela polícia, a facção passou a ditar as regras do crime nos presídios de São Paulo, impôs sua influência sobre outros estados e agora se internacionaliza a uma velocidade vertiginosa. Nunca essa realidade foi retratada com tintas tão fortes.
