GUERRILLA MARKETING FOR ARTISTS: NEW BOOK BY BARNEY DAVEY

Just as guerrillas never fight wars, but concentrate on winning chosen skirmishes, Guerrilla Marketing for Artists teaches artists how to break down ambitious goals into small incremental steps. The 184-page softcover book by industry veteran Barney Davey of Scottsdale, AZ, is designed to help artists using the advice within its pages to achieve major career goals by completing small tasks broken down by long-range project planning. Using this method, artists can get more things done, which creates a sense of accomplishment, removes the stress of being overwhelmed, and can motivate them to do more.

The book is written specifically for independent artists, advising them on the most effective ways to sell direct to collectors and capitalize on new opportunities. The Internet, social media, and digital technology provide artists the ability to create their own affordable and effective marketing programs, and Mr. Davey explains how. Since 1988, through his books, blogs, workshops, and consulting, Barney Davey has helped numerous independent visual artists improve their art careers. He is the author of four books on art marketing, including Guerrilla Marketing for Artists

From the Author

I began advising visual artists in 1988. So much has changed since those days, it is hard to remember what it was like sometimes. I had a computer with no hard drive. It ran off two 5-inch floppy disks. Fax machines and Fedex were cutting edge technology. The print market was near the peak of its heyday with 4-color offset editions in the thousand and tens of thousands in some cases. Giclee prints were non-existent. The Internet was not yet invented.

Nowadays, consumer buying habits have been forever altered by a the Internet, e-commerce, big box retailing and so many other factors. These changes have cut into how most products, including art, get distributed. On one hand the big box stores and Amazon rule the roost and on the other, there is a longing for handmade, authentic goods, especially those made at the local level.

Artists can tap into these changes. In many ways, this is the best time to be an artist. Artists have the ability to create an affordable, effective marketing system that allows them to build direct relationships with buyers. They don't have to rely on the old school methods of getting their work to market. That is not to say I advocate abandoning traditional marketing, I just believe it should be done in support of direct marketing.

By building a loyal base of fans and collectors, artists can bulletproof their careers against the whims of gallery owners and changes in the marketplace beyond their control. If Facebook fades in popularity, if other online venues stumble, it may make a dent, but it won't derail an art career.

This book is about learning how to take control of your art career... to become the master of your own destiny in ways never possible to previous generations of artists. I say seize the day and get started bulletproofing your career today!
