Book By Legendary American Mystic William Samuel A GUIDE TO AWARENESS AND TRANQUILLITY Few spiritual books convey the direct experience of being in the presence. A rare exception is William Samuel s A Guide to Awareness and Tranquillity. The premise of his book is as inspiring as it is groundbreaking: There exists a gentle experience of Truth and it s available to each of us. With insight and wisdom, Samuel shows us how it s this presence rather than the books, teachers, techniques, and organizations we call religious that matters most in the spiritual life. Written with authority, humor, and extraordinary insight, Samuel gives readers interested in spiritual life a practical way to discover truth for themselves. His words, gentle and plainspoken, impart the same wisdom that for centuries readers have found in the words of the great enlightened ones. J.K. Book Review by Jerry Katz Nonduality Highlights - Friday, April 25, 2008 -Editor: Jerry Katz A Guide to Awareness and Tranquillity, by William Samuel Biography: A Baker from Alabama William Samuel never received the attention he deserved because he wasn't part of the Zeitgeist of the 60s and 70s. Unlike his contemporary, the popular Alan Watts, Samuel was not involved in psychedelics, Zen, the Human Potential Movement, San Francisco spiritual subculture. Nor was Samuel associated with TM, the music of the times, Woodstock, or war protests. Bill Samuel live in Alabama, for gosh sakes, where he owned a bakery. He spoke simply and in an old-fashioned manner about awareness or God, basically. Yet Samuel spoke a very modern nondual message. In fact, let's face it, he was, and probably still is, ahead of his times. A Teacher of Teachers: It's not to say William Samuel never had a following, even though he didn't encourage it: Most tenacious among those beliefs is the insanity that one must be either a leader or a follower. Allness leads what? Singleness follows whom? He was considered a teacher's teacher. With a genius IQ and a gift for communication, he would get the most earnest and dedicated students of Truth. Quite a number of Taoists and Buddhists had found William's message and came to study--even some who were called Masters. Samuel saw fierce action in World War II, studied with a Taoist monk, traveled around the world seeking spiritual truth, was the first American to sit with a sage in India who would become world famous. Like Walking on Beach Stones: This book is collection of brief letters, conversations, lectures, writings. They are organized into chapters, yet each short selection stands alone as a confession of awareness, as awareness, from the Identity of peace and tranquillity. In order to see Truth as Truth is, it is only necessary to be the Truth one already is - and cease from the false identification, from the one who uses, manipulates and 'possesses' Truth. ... 'But how do I do this?' ... We do this by simply being motiveless Awareness only - which, among other things, is to perceive without opinions (judgments), without saying 'this is good' and 'that is evil,' 'I like' and 'I don't like.' Inevitably, the first step is to end judgment, then to perceive that our real Identity is Awareness itself, not the ego-container. It is as simple as this. Words cannot tell of the wonders that become apparent when this effortlessness is put into practice. The proof is not things! Never! If it were, the United States would be overflowing with saints. Doctors would treat only the poor. The judgment that the presence of 'things' is 'proof' of one's understanding is only the other end of the same dualistic nothingness that claims a lack of health, wealth or harmony is real! Do not be trapped into believing that the presence (or absence) of 'things' is either proof or disproof of Suffiency, Tranquillity, Being. Samuel covers other topics: attending church, grief, depression, business, money, death, love. Refers to the Teachings of Christ: Though this book is not a work of nondual Christianity, Samuel does show how his teaching of awareness and tranquillity is supported by Christ's teaching: In a discussion on the limitations of positive thinking, Samuel writes;'Who by taking thought can add one inch to his stature?' Jesus asked. Jerry Katz --Nonduality Highlights - Friday, April 25, 2008 -Editor: Jerry Katz
About the Author
William Samuel (1924-1996) Mystic, Writer, Teacher William Samuel, (September 2, 1924-May 22, 1996) was a prolific writer of truth, science, religion, and spiritual awakening. William Samuel was known as the teacher's teacher perhaps because so many teachers come to study with him. There was an inordinate number of philosophers, theologians, and members of the academe. In the later years there came physicists and mathematicians. It seemed to William that he would get the most earnest and dedicated students of Truth. Quite a number of Taoists and Buddhists had found William's message and came to study--even some who were called Masters. Many have gone from his study to become authors, writers and teachers. In some marvelous way his story has been found by the metaphysical and scientific elite of all the word--at least by a few. He said When it is told perfectly, my whole world will hear. Although, Mr. Samuel did not embrace the idea of being called a teacher, saying: I've been telling my own story--how it happened and what it has allowed me to understand--for over 30 years. That is not the same as being a teacher. William was a master teacher who has found a way to communicate honestly and clearly his insights on the Absolute and the premises of the metaphysical and Non-Duality. William Samuel was one of those rare people who could synthesize the teachings of Eastern thought and Western religions. His work offers a clear explanation of the nature of enlightenment through simple uncomplicated language. He has a genuine gift of communication, a method of communication that uses words in such a manner that creates a synergy that allows the reader/listener to hear a message that transcends the ordinary limits of words.. He communicates beyond intellectualism. William discovered that he had a unique gift that allowed him to teach that which is most often said to be 'un-teachable'. He found a way to write in layers, sounding overtones, much like music; the words are like the single notes comeing together creating chords. Then, layer upon layer, the right chords are struck and the heart hears the full message in the way one hears a whole symphony. Because of this gift, his work is best read gently and without struggle to understand. William often said about his message, to read and listen to with the Heart.

"The world is not as it appears to be…” to the believed-in, theoretical, mortal self.
The trouble is, someone (more accurately, most everyone) has convinced you that what you are is a finite, mortal self, fused to the physical body. That's the past… it happened. But now you have a choice to either question this theory or to keep on blindly believing it.
If you choose the latter, then you have “the world not as it appears to be,” and you have a perfect setup for misery. Because so long as you ascribe to the theory of personal mortality, you are compelled to grab for all the gusto (and real estate, such as foreign countries) you can. Because if you truly have only a few decades of this glorious experience called life, then anything that impedes, denies, prevents even ONE SECOND of that gloriousness, must be resisted, condemned, fought and even killed.
In fact, that's the world situation right now. Therefore, can there be any more urgent task than to find, read and apply a User Manual and Guide to …. Well, Awareness! Your perfectly tranquil and perfectly all-knowing awareness knows the truth about the theory of personal mortality. Why not ask IT, instead of continuing to let the theory run your existence?
“A beautiful, magnificent harmony is spread over the entire face of the land; perfection permeates everything. This perfect harmony is readily discernible and immediately available to anyone willing to acknowledge its presence and pay the small price demanded of it. What is this price?”
You are just one click away from finding out what is this small price. William Samuel inspires like no other to motivate you to find out the price and cultivate the know-how, ways and means to pay it and reap the rewards: Perfect peace and tranquility. It's the end of war in your life, and the world.
However, we have a mind that apparently thinks, and this conditioned mind from infancy to wherever you are now has learned that you are this personality. I learned that I am this personality called Stephen, and I learned all kinds of social, civic, and what it means to be me. This self is not it; it is a story I have developed all my life.
Mr. Samuel says to recognize your true Self you need to drop the personality. And, I would see, you can't drop it per se; but you can, as Mr. Samuel says, open your heart to the teaching. Allow the intellect to decrease and from the heart Life, Consciousness, Awareness will blossom.
At the end of the book Mr. Samuel encourages readers to start immediately to read again. I have started this reading.
I love this book. It is the clearest expression of "spirituality" I have read. Mr. Samuel puts the book together in a way where he seems to be talking directly to me.
This book will broaden your horizons no matter what you are seeking. It will likely show you how to improve all your affairs, including your business and profession. You don't need to be a spiritua seeker to benefit from this text.
That's my take on A Guide to Awaness and Tranquility. Peace and joy unto you.
His gift was not only the skill to be simple yet precise in his teaching, but he was seemingly endowed with the power to lift the reader into that dimension of Consciousness about which he wrote so beautifully - the Kingdom of God. He was indeed, " A Teacher of Teachers, and you only need to take a short stroll with him along the Way, before your heart will start burning within you with Love and Grace.
