Santideva’s Bodhicaryavatara (A Guide to the Bodhisattva Way of Life) is one of the most revered Buddhist Scriptures. It follows that this little book has seen more than its share of translations from the literal to the scholarly interpretive to the more or less accessible to the layman. On the whole, it is not an easy book to go to bed with.
B. Alan Wallace, whom I admire and respect, in this translation of Santideva’s classic draws from both Indian (Sanskrit) and Tibetan versions and presents us with an immensely readable and (I assume) faithful to the original book.
It is not an easy book to wrap your wits around, especially not in the latter stages of logical defense and reputation of various views on emptiness, et cetera, but Wallace does a good job of footnoting our way to clear explanations.
My only lament is that the book does not have a glossary of Tibetan and/or Sanskrit terms, which Wallace uses quite freely, often not defined, and that is the only reason I give the book four stars instead of five.
