With interest rates down to almost zero, how does someone invest wisely for the future? How do you build a retirement nest egg or save for your kids college? The answer is to listen to Rick Tomaska. I saw him on a cable TV coin show a couple of times and noticed I was being educated more than I was being sold a coin. I immediately went to Amazon.com and purchased Rick's book, A Guide Book of Franklin & Kennedy Half Dollars. I blew through this book in two days!

Rick Tomaska has put together some of the finest coin sets for his clients. He was instrumental in helping David Hall and others set up modern grading standards for cameo designations for coins. He has been a collector, dealer and appraiser for Franklin and Kennedy halves for over 20 years. He explains why cameo designated Franklin and Kennedy halves are exceptionally rare and how their current prices are similar to silver dollars were back in the 1980's.

This guide book lists all the Franklin and Kennedy halves populations going back to 1950 to present and tells you which coins and in what grade offer the greatest profit potential. It really helps explain what makes sense to collect and where you can find bargains.

I wish I had read this book many years ago. It would have been an invaluable guide for me in coin investing and saved me many dollars spent on coins with limited profit potential.

Here is an expert with over 30 years in the business who is THE expert in Franklin and Kennedy halves, especially the proof specimens, who is sharing his insights with you and helping you collect the coins with exceptional upside potential.

This is a must have book for anyone who loves collecting coins as well as those looking for great earnings potential for the future. A great buy for a small price!

Good resource for these two coin series. There is nothing overly interesting about either series, so sometimes the author was grasping at straws to find enough to write a book about. I've always viewed these coin series as being great for beginning collectors because they can complete an entire set without going bankrupt. As we say in the hobby, "buy the book before the coin," this would be an excellent resource for beginning collectors.

While Rick Tomaska has become the leading recognized expert on Franklin and Kennedy half dollars and he does provide some expert insights, I expected more in the way of information on highly recognized varieties (repositioned mint marks and double dies), attributes which are even detailed now on coins graded by PCGS and NGC and in books like the Cherrypicker's Guides and by CONECA. I believe ANACS should receive more credit as the originators of third-party grading and as a leading grading service. The census of Franklins does not include those graded by PCGS. His census figures come from WCG, which is not recognized as one of the better grading services. I think there should have been more research into the real census numbers. Being an avid reader of The Gobrecht Journal, I expected more research and significant photos of coin details and attributes such as those that the contributors to the Seated Liberty coin fraternity supply and their readers have come to expect.

I was so disappointed with this book I felt like writing a letter to Whitman Publishing (the publisher of this book) about this book. I still might. This book is written by a man who owns a coin store that only sells Franklin and Kennedy Half Dollars. He has advertisements in all the newspapers and magazines dealing with coins. He calls himself an expert, but you couldn't call the prices he charges anything but over inflated. This guide book, if it can be called that, reflects his over inflated prices he charges in his advertisements. Mistakes he made in the first edition of this book remain. For example, he writes that the 1998 S Kennedy half with satin finish was a SMS coin. It isn't. SMS stands for Special Mint Set and coins made in this manner have a proof like surface. The satin finish is dull. He also totally disregards the fact that this coin was one coin in a set of two coins (the other was for his brother Robert Kennedy). The method used for making Satin coins is completely different from a coin made in proof, mint state or SMS. Even beginning coin collectors know this! Not the so called expert apparently. This book is filled with mistakes like this. This book also has a forward written by Q. David Bowers, a very well known and respected coin and auction dealer. Apparently Mr. Bowers didn't read the book before agreeing to write the forward. I deeply regret buying this book. I certainly won't be using it for anything but how NOT to write a book. I suggest you pass on this. It was written in Fantasyland with no regard to reality.

Rick Tomaski probably knows more about Franklin & Kennedy half dollars than anyone.
I am a Kennedy Cameo collector and he has given me great advice on collecting cameos.
He has years of experience and has seen some of the best examples of these coins ever
minted. This is a definite have for anyone interested in Franklin or Kennedy Half Dollars.
