I got this book because I wanted something that gave an overview of the California Planning system. I'm an architect and urban designer new to California and wanted something that would introduce me to the state's quite specific approach to urban planning policy and planning law. I found this book as it was required reading for Urban Planning courses at Berkeley and Davis. It's well written and edited, and comprehensive and detailed without getting stuck in the minutiae or digressing. It gives a nice history and introduces the role of the state to regional to local (by local, I mean city-county, don't get this if you want to get planning for your building- that's not what this book is for).

This is an excellent book for professional planners, consultants, or even the general public that just want to learn more about planning, land use law, and permitting in California. It's written in simple language that is easy to follow and covers all the basics of everything you need to know. It was a lifesaver when I started off in the planning field!

I read this book because my daughter was taking an urban planning class and asked me some questions. This is by far the best, most accurate global description of the urban planning process that I have ever read. Best of all, it describes the process from all sides. I personally think that those who will succeed in urban planning must understand the "other side's" point of view, however much they may disagree with it. The author's emphasis on balancing, balancing, balancing certainly comports with my years of legal practice in the field.

I purchased this book for a class and found very informative and easy to read. The focus is obviously California, but I thought it conveyed information better than the book The Urban Pattern.

I kept this textbook after my summer quarter 2012 class ended. There is so much useful information in this textbook.

This is a great general look at planning in the academic world. The only complaint I have is that it needs much more detail on the "How To's" of planning to even be considered as usefull in the workplace. But again it's great if your in school and want to learn more (it's probably the best source for that kind of thing).

It's used but was not kept well, although the ad claimed it was 99% good - a false statement.
