I'm one of those women. Reading this book was like reading my own history! I just turned 59 and if only someone had given me information on the possibility of any of the problems I would develop, I would absolutely, positively, have never allowed my surgery! Though I lived with terrible pain and other problems from Endometriosis, it was nothing compared to the pain, surgeries and debilitating health I've lived since. I was one of those women who were told they just had to remove my uterus and I'd feel like a new woman. I was told my ovaries would provide the hormones I needed. I was never told there was any possibility of them failing. So at 25yo, I accepted my doctors determination that I required it.
Though not dramatic, I noticed changes in myself within the first six months but nothing I could put my finger on, other than progressive depression for which I sought help and ended in therapy and taking anti depressants. I had no idea why I had gone from a very much in love, happily married mother of three for 8 years before my surgery, to a very depressed, unhappy wife. We were separated in less than a yr after my surgery and later divorced.
I began to have continuous health problems, though thank God, they were gradual and I was able to care for and raise my children. It wasn't until seven yrs after my surgery, just two months after my present marriage when out of the blue, I ended up in emergency surgery and almost died from.an infection that developed with my right ovary and caused its removal, that I found out neither had been producing hormones I required! Even though I had had the hysterectomy, not one Dr ever checked my hormones until that surgery! Who knows how long I had gone without them. My ovaries had failed and all they remained good for was to put me through two more major surgeries, since my left one became infected eventually also.
I could write a book about my health problems and the progressive destruction of my life since that first surgery! The bone loss, failed surgeries, depression, chronic fatigue and as I said, I could go on but it would take a book!
I RECOMMEND ALL WOMEN TO READ THIS BOOK and find a Dr who will give you the facts! PROTECT YOURSELF and DAUGHTERS and if you absolutely have to have this surgery, find a Dr who is educated in Bio-HRT. Though most can't be reversed or fixed for me, I just found a Dr who prescribes them a year ago and they have helped some. Who knows what could have been prevented if I hadn't gone for over 25 yrs without them? Yes, I was on pharmaceutical Premarin for a number of yrs but that's another miserable story. The information is out there now; BE WELL INFORMED to have a healthier, happier life!!!
She said that because I wasn't planning to have more children, removing the uterus and my ovaries would save me from getting Ovarian Cancer or Uterine Cancer, which, of course, scared me. She said I would be taking HRT -(hormone replacement therapy) and I would live happily ever after.
Until I read this book, I thought I was going insane and so did everybody I know. I had NO idea that I was being CASTRATED and automaticly lost 50 different chemicals that your body makes on its own when you have all your female parts.
This book is full of information for any woman who has been told she needs a Total Hysterectomy. Judge for yourself after you've read it. The woman who wrote it is a medical researcher and had the procedure so many years ago and suffered greatly until she started using bio-identical hormones like I am now.
One more thing - I WANT THOSE TWELVE YEARS OF MY LIFE BACK!!
Ms. Plourdes goal seems to be to convince women that hysterectomy is always unnecessary and is inevitably a negative, life altering procedure.
