A Guide Book of Morgan Silver Dollars by Q. David Bowers is a "must have" resource for any collector of Morgans, from novice beginners through professional dealers. This book includes everything a hobbyist needs to know about selecting, grading, pricing, and comparing all Morgan silver dollars. Every year and mint mark are addressed in an easy-to-read and understand style and it is also a concise and valuable resource to keep by your side as you shop online or in person for your next treasure. This book gives you the price guides, populations, mint histories, and common die varieties of every coin, as well as good advice on how to select the right coin for your collection. Highly recommended for anyone who loves Morgan silver dollars.

Excellent resource. Author even has suggestions about how to "get started" collecting Morgan Silver Dollars. Clearly explained "grading methods." I bring this book with me everywhere. It is so interestingly organized. It is more than a research book, it is an accurate historical, yet practical resource of these coins.

As a 1st and 2nd edition owner and a collector who is about 35% into a PCGS date/mint set, I love how this edition is in color.

It is nice that the prices are updated, the population reports are updated, and some realistic "Optimal Collecting Grades" for collectors. The history in this book is rich. Very rich indeed. The book begins with the overall history of the silver dollar in the US, the Bland-Allison Act, the basics of making coins and the mints, the Sherman Silver Purchase Act, and the dreaded Pittman Act.

I do recommend reading Section 7: Ways to Collect Morgan Silver Dollars. There is a great list of a "basic collection of Morgan dollars" that includes dates, mints, and a few of the common varieties. In this edition, the descriptions of the varieties and key dates are more than in the 2nd edition.

The "Grading and the Market place" section is 25 pages with ANA grading standards for Morgan dollars, IN COLOR! It is a must read if you do not know anything about how to grade, history of the Sheldon grading scale, the Sheldon scale, or the markets.

My one big ding against the book is the GSA Sale info. It would be nice to see the same GSA totals as are in "the VAM book." If you want exact numbers of Morgans released in the GSA sale, go get the "Comprehensive Catalogue and Encyclopedia of Morgan and Peace Dollars" by Leroy C. Van Allen and A. George Mallis aka the VAM book. This info in the VAM book is in one chart. The GSA info is burried in individual coin write ups. The overall GSA info about the run up to the GSA sale and the GSA sale is about on the same level as the VAM book.

Morgan/Coin Collecting Tips:
1.) If you need a cheap copy, the 2nd edition was for sale at the Whitman Show for $10.
2.

This is s fantastic book outlining everything you would want to know about Morgan dollars. In addition to giving very detailed information about how to evaluate the coins, down to details that most people would not even think of, the author also gives some historical context for each of the years the coin was produced. Lots of good pictures, coinage production figures and pricing. For everyone who is interested in Morgan dollars, a great reference.

This is a really well written basic beginner's guide to Morgans (it's not overly detailed and encompassing). It's very well organized, has nice illustrations and pictures. Each date has a little description/vignette of what happened in U.S. history during that year. It's as much a book for collectors as for people who like history! I found it entertaining in addition to being a great basic resource.

As expected. It has a ton of information on Morgan Dollars. I wish there was a summary graph of some type so you didnt have to read the entire book to understand which years produced the most valuable Morgan Dollars, etc.

I bought this book on a whim to learn about coin collecting and specifically about the Morgan Silver Dollars. This is a history of that silver dollar and how to evaluate these coins through the eyes of a collector. It seems like a good starter book for someone interested in these pieces. I did find the history rather interesting and especially enjoyed the author's sections entitled, "Meanwhile, on the American Scene in 18--", in which he added a historical section for each year that the Morgan Dollar was stamped out. This book is not going to turn me into a coin collector, but I did enjoy it. Perhaps I'll go and acquire a couple of Morgans for the fun of it.
