It is nice that the prices are updated, the population reports are updated, and some realistic "Optimal Collecting Grades" for collectors. The history in this book is rich. Very rich indeed. The book begins with the overall history of the silver dollar in the US, the Bland-Allison Act, the basics of making coins and the mints, the Sherman Silver Purchase Act, and the dreaded Pittman Act.
I do recommend reading Section 7: Ways to Collect Morgan Silver Dollars. There is a great list of a "basic collection of Morgan dollars" that includes dates, mints, and a few of the common varieties. In this edition, the descriptions of the varieties and key dates are more than in the 2nd edition.
The "Grading and the Market place" section is 25 pages with ANA grading standards for Morgan dollars, IN COLOR! It is a must read if you do not know anything about how to grade, history of the Sheldon grading scale, the Sheldon scale, or the markets.
My one big ding against the book is the GSA Sale info. It would be nice to see the same GSA totals as are in "the VAM book." If you want exact numbers of Morgans released in the GSA sale, go get the "Comprehensive Catalogue and Encyclopedia of Morgan and Peace Dollars" by Leroy C. Van Allen and A. George Mallis aka the VAM book. This info in the VAM book is in one chart. The GSA info is burried in individual coin write ups. The overall GSA info about the run up to the GSA sale and the GSA sale is about on the same level as the VAM book.
Morgan/Coin Collecting Tips:
1.) If you need a cheap copy, the 2nd edition was for sale at the Whitman Show for $10.
