"A Guide to Northeastern Gardening is an accumulation of years of experience as a gardener and designer." "Late bloomers often pursue their true passions late in life. After a long career in education, Lee Miller decided to pursue one of her greatest passions; landscape design. A gardener who is just starting out could easily comb through Lee's book, "A Guide to Northeastern Gardening", and begin to plan their garden based on a selection from Lee's list of recommended perennials, trees and shrubs (for both sun and shade). One of the early chapters in the book is "Long Blooming Perennials for your Garden." I thought, as I dived into this chapter, that narrowing a list down to ten plants couldn't have been easy. Each choice is based on Lee's own experiences and is augmented with a helpful plant profile. If you have problems with deer, Chapter 3 with a list and profiles for deer resistant plants is for you. Shade garden? Then you want to check out Chapter 10. As you can see from Lee's own garden, she knows how to work with evergreens, shrubs and flowering trees. Though I am an experienced gardener, I am not nearly so confident when it comes to dwarf or weeping evergreens, so I really appreciated the chapters dedicated to conifers. Simply picking out plants isn't nearly enough. The book provides helpful information on the elements of garden design; structure, form, color, foliage and texture. I particularly enjoyed Chapter 7: The Design of a Long Island Native Garden which details the steps from design to execution for one of Lee's bigger projects. It was fun to follow Lee's thought process and she how she decided to approach the design challenges. The final section of the book has handy maps with garden zones and the answers to frequently asked questions. In conclusion, I want to say how much I admire all Lee has accomplished. Preface, I am mostly interested in edible, medicinal or native plants and their relation to permaculture, and their interesting characteristics from a botany perspective… so this one really didn’t scratch my itches. It does read like a bunch of casual articles threaded together with no real focus of information. I did learn a few things, so it wasn’t a waste. I think it would be good for someone who lives in the northeast and just wants easy courage throw some plants in their yard. I didn’t like how a few flowers suggested were known to be non native and invasive, and this wasn’t mentioned. And yeah, there were plants suggested that I personally know to have interesting usages, Kousa dogwood has edible berries, wintergreen is edible, wasn’t mentioned in the text. And no warnings about which of the perennials require what sorts of upkeep ie coral bells have to be maintained or they do not improve with age. A lot was left out, for me. I read northeastern I would like to see more plants native to the northeast, and mention of which ones are invasive in the northeast.

This garden book is loaded with information. The great thing is that you can quickly read it and put your new garden knowledge to use right away. It's very organized and to the point. The author offers her expertise in gardening in zones 3-9 and suggests plant combinations to try, and even provides lists of plants for various gardening situations such as, deer proof gardens, shade gardens, butterfly gardens, best trees and shrubs for the Northeast, longest blooming perennials, and much more. Basically you can duplicate what's in the book into your own garden. You could also use the book when shopping for plants, designing your garden, or when transplanting so you'll know which plants to plant next to each other. Another bonus is that she tells you specific varieties of plants she recommends - rather than just listing "daylilies," she tells you specific varieties of daylilies she recommends. And she tells you specific varieties of spirea, lilacs, echinacea, dogwood, viburnum, and other plants that perform best in zones 3-9.

This easy-to-read book has good basic gardening information that is especially useful to the beginning gardener (although as an experienced gardener I learned a few new things.) The book is illustrated with beautiful photographs. The dozen or so chapters cover many aspects of gardening from choosing long-blooming perennials and deer-resistant plants to planting techniques and maintenance tips. My personal favorites are the chapters on planning a butterfly garden, on four-season garden design (I struggle with this as I don't feel I have enough winter-interest in my own garden), and the section on weeping evergreens. I learned how to rejuvenate daylilies and the proper planting technique for trees. I love Lee's use of evergreens in the landscape. The book, like her blog, makes me wish I could tour Lee's gardens in person.

Again I found that I had to write a review for this author. Her books are very informative. This book tells a little about the author and how she started in this business. It is great for the beginner or seasoned gardener. It guides the reader through all aspects of gardening from understanding what perennials are to finding deer resistant plants along with plants, shrubs and trees for sunny locations to full shade garden. It shows you how to build a butterfly garden as well as giving maintenance tips on keeping your plants healthy and beautiful. Definitely would recommend this book to any gardener!

This book is an easy read and so informative! It ranges from zones 3-9 so don't let the name fool you to think that it wouldn't work for you if you don't live in the northeast. Lee Miller focuses on beautiful plants that can work in any garden. Wait until you read her tip on daylilies. It will have you seeing blooms more than once in a season! I highly recommend this book to the amatuer gardener, like myself, to the professional. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. It is my favorite "go to" book for my gardens.
