She also tells you how to protect your inquisitive Quaker parrot from household accidents, and emphasizes the importance of reinforcing desirable behavior habits in your pet. New in this edition is a discussion of recently identified anatomical features of the Quaker parrot, plus tips on recovering escaped birds, and background information on Quaker parrots in their native ranges.

Although any new Quaker owner will receive plenty of helpful basic information about housing, feeding, and health care, the real value of this book is in its in-depth study of Quaker behavior, personality, socialization, handling, and training. This is not a book to read once and put on the shelf; it is an "owner's manual" for the Quaker Parrot that should be kept handy and referred to over and over again as questions and problems arise. Even the experienced Quaker owner can learn much from this well-planned and easy to use guide.
What Ms. Athan first did for all parrot owners with "The Guide to a Well-Behaved Parrot," she now does especially for Quaker owners with this book. She clearly explains procedures and principles for socializing, training, and dealing with behavorial problems of the Quaker Parrot. A special section on Quakers and children will be especially helpful to families, and the chapter on "rehabilitation" will be invaluable to anyone acquiring a "second-hand" Quaker.
It's my personal opinion that if everyone who owns a companion Quaker were to read this book and use the principles and methods contained therein, eighty to ninety percent of Quakers who are being given up to rescue or breeding situations would be able to remain in their homes as cherished companions. If you now own or are planning to get a Quaker, this book is as essential as the cage, food, and toys.

This book is a good place to start. I've lived with a Quaker for more than 4 years now. He loves me and barely tolerates my husband in the house. I've often wondered what was going on in his mind. And thanks to Ms. Athen's book, I have a much better idea. My Quaker's behavior is pretty typical for a Quaker. This book gave me some reassurance that he's "supposed" to act the way he does, also some indication of "why" he acts the way he does, and a few ideas of how to change the things he does. I plan to read it a second time in a few weeks, just to solidify all the ideas that were raised.

I got a quaker parrot about a week ago and had no idea of how to take care of it. After reading this book I know everything. This book tells you the basics like the cage size needed and what to feed it, but it also goes into some subjects that you would not expect like how to potty train your bird. It staites many times how to socialize your bird so that it gets along well with the whole family and so that it doesn't bite. It also talks about why and were the birds are outlawed. If you want to know everything about Quakers this is the book for you!

I am the happy companion of a 7 month old Quaker parrot. This book by Ms. Athan is a must read for anyone who has a Quaker, or is considering getting one. It has helped me to understand why my Quaker acts the way he does, and to properly train him to be a happy, friendly little guy. Ms. Athan clearly explains behaviors in an easy to read manner. She keeps it interesting. I have read this book cover to cover a few times, and have used it several times for reference. Her other book, "Guide to a Well-Behaved Parrot", is an essential read. This book reviews parrots' behavior in general, and also helps out with my Quaker. He may be small - but he's all parrot! Bottom line - good books by Ms. Athan.

Quaker parrots have been said to be either the best or worst kind of parrot you could own, and thanks to this incredibly helpful and imformative book by Mattie Sue Athan all three of of my Quakers fit into the best category. After several years of having parrots, I relaize how little I actually knew about them when I started out and can truthfully attribute much of my success to Ms. Athan's incredible insight. I would definitely reccomend this book to anyone buying a Quaker, as well as Mattie Sue Athan's Guide to Companion Parrot Behavior. Both are invaluable resources for any concientious parrot owner. Lots of luck to all out there interested in buying a little (or big) feathered friend!

I should never visit the bird store because I inevitably leave with a new bird. My latest new friend is a Quaker Parrot I have named Jessie in honor of the Quaker lady writer from California who wrote THE FRIENDLY PERSUASION. Also called the Monk Parakeet because of his or her grey feather cowl and long tail, these little birds hail from Argentina and other places in South America. According to Mattie Sue Athan, who has caught a few escapees in her home town of Denver, the Quaker can stand cooler temperatures than many parrots. Athan is a big fan of the Quaker. She says they are prolific talkers, something like the African Grey, and yet smaller and less messy. What's not to like about this bird? Apparently, they can be noisy, but what's an `Ak Ak Ak" or two. Athan says folks either love or hate this bird, but many consider it THE parrot to own. Read her book before you buy one.

I put a deposit on my quaker without knowing much about it. All I knew was that my aunt had had one and it was cute, but you couldn't touch it. After I made the deposit, I came to amazon and bought this wonderful book. It inspired my passion for parrots. If I hadn't bought this book, Sweet Pea might be a lot like my aunt's quaker, cute, but you wouldn't be able to touch her. She is an integral part of our life, and is like the child we can't have. My only problem with the book is that is doesn't mention "trick" training as part of the bonding process. But it is not a big enough problem to warrant giving it less than 5 stars!
