John Seymour, the acknowledged founding father of the self-sufficiency movement, was an active campaigner for the countryside, the environment, and above all a sustainable, compassionate way of living. He wrote over 40 books and broadcast widely on television and radio. His farm in Wales and later Ireland welcomed visitors seeking guidance on a more self supporting life.

John lived back on his old Pembrokeshire farm with his daughter's family for his last years. He died on September 14, 2004 and is buried in the top field of his old farm in an orchard that he planted.

His legacy lives on, and his books 'The New Complete Book of Self-Sufficiency' and 'The New Self-Sufficient Gardener' are still best sellers. His more intimate books about his family's self-sufficient life include the classic 'The Fat of the Land', now in its 50th year in print, and its sequel 'I'm a Stranger Here Myself', which is back in print at last.

This book is amazing! It has everything and more that one might need to become self sufficient and or be off the grid. This is the type of lifestyle that most of us should return to and with the state of the economy and our world today, we may have no choice. So being prepared to know what to do in that situation will be vital and even IF you aren't practicing the day to day routine of these instructions, you will, at the very least, have at your disposal a guide that can teach you and you can return to again and again for knowledge. I can't recommend this book highly enough. When I say it covers it all, I mean everything from gardening, canning, plotting out your land and how to use your animals and waste products to nourish that land for free and far more healthy than using poisonous fertilizers. It shows you how to grow crops that can sustain you AND your animals so the cost of raising your animals is greatly reduced. Or how to take care of both of you when there are no stores to go to to get your milk, butter, meat, vegetables, grains and food for your livestock.

Nothing may ever happen, but if things do take place that causes even just a month or two of disruption, you can feel secure that you have taken care of your family through preparation, and that is priceless. And this book can help you get there!

Seymour speaks highly of the decentralized small scale farming communities like author Gene Logsdon. His approach focuses on returning everything to the earth, increasing fertility by practicing strict crop rotations and pasture management, and providing for ones family with healthy homegrown food using natural organic methods.

By far the most comprehensive and entertaining book about homesteading. Published in '76.

I bought this book for my wife, who had one and loaned it out and it never returned. It is very nostalgic. It does give loads of solutions for the gentleman farmer. It has many solutions to problems and tips for doing things the old way. Some of these old ways are the best.
This is a fun book and a treasure for folks that have a farm or some acreage, or even around the house.
I highly recommend this book.
