This book is phenomenal. The other person who reviewed it is clearly not trained in the topic area. You will never find a more thourough, concise, up-to-date review of the scientific/empirical evidence for and against specific treatments for the most common mental health problems anywhere. David Barlow's Handbook of Psychological Disorders has very good data on some of these problems, and it actually tells you how to deliver treatments, which this book does not. But Barlow's book does not come close in terms of the sheer number of problems that are covered. They are two books with two very different aims, and anyone who is licensed to treat mental health problems should be required to own both.

I purchased this for a clinical psychology course, but am as interested in the chapters we are not covering as I am in the required readings. This is not something to read cover to cover, but something to look up the details on the disorder you are interested in.

A great book and a great idea to summarize important research with 25 articles and a 9 page overall summary. I agree with Robert Young's review. On the November 2009 review: of course it matters how treatments are "delivered" or who delivers them but that is a separate question. This book deals with a fundamental scientific issue in a basic way which most people in the profession will understand. There is a substantial literature addressing other issues including how treatments are delivered. Other good books and information on mental health can be found here:

A lot of smart people have given this book great reviews. I still think they are all wrong. The two biggest problems are: 1) BY FAR the biggest determinent of the effectiveness of psychological treatment is how the treatment is delivered, and not which treatment is delivered, 2) Every minute you spend with this book will be a minute less spent learning how to treat people effectively.
