Product Description
A classic tale is reborn through the inspired imagination of cinematic dream-weaver Guillermo del Toro, directing alongside Mark Gustafson. Realized through boundary-pushing, breathtakingly intricate stop-motion animation, this dark rendering of the fable of the puppet boy and his maker—which won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature—daringly transfers the story to Fascist Italy, where the irrepressible Pinocchio gradually learns what it means to be human through his experiences of war, death, and sacrifice. Featuring the voices of Ewan McGregor, Cate Blanchett, Tilda Swinton, and Christoph Waltz, this Pinocchio imbues the oft-told tale with a bold new resonance about living with courage and compassion.

I would say this Criterion edition is worth buying due to Guillermo Del Toro being one of the few directors supporting physical media. We are in era where business is aiming for digital media to dominate the market. As a victim of losing rights to digital products in the past, physical media is still the strongest form of holding onto property that you rightfully paid for; please support this cause.

First of all, it is del Toro through and through. Every scene is just slightly tainted by his dark vision. It’s set in fascist Italy and some sequences might have come from Bertolucci. The first half hour crashes through death, religion, morality, loss, grief… His Pinocchio is unbearably cheerful about everything in a confoundingly refreshing way. Once again he smashes childhood into the face of the grimmest realities of wartime fascism.
The musical numbers here are so astonishing to watch… One is lost in the lighting and sound editing. Its elegance is enchanting.
The voice acting is incredible… Ewan McGregor, SWINTON, Christoph Waltz, Ron Perlman… The monkey is played by Cate Blanchet! The wooden boy is played by young Gregory Mann, and he’s really exceptional. The song Ciao Papa is actually stunning. His direction sets a new standard for child actors. It really does.
When the dreaded figure of Mussolini finally appears, he is shorter that most of the children and almost spherically obese. It is the finest appearance of Il Duce since Fellini’s Amarcord (1973).
If somehow you let this film slide when it came out, it’s really worth seeking out. The Criterion edition is naturally fantastic. I can’t wait for the whole second disc of extras.

Pinocchio had a limited theatrical run and was released by Netflix. I recently cancelled my subscription, so I'm glad I have a copy of this film on hand. Discs are still the best way to enjoy films at home! It's also nice to see some more animation in the Criterion Collection. GKIDS has the rights to the entire Studio Ghibli library, and half of Satoshi Kon's filmography, so when it comes to the obvious candidates, other distributors have the rights to the kind of animation that Criterion would be interested in releasing.
