The world created is fascinating and draws you in waiting for the next event.
So after at least two decades, I am still hooked.
The characters are well rounded and believable. They have their faults, morals and strengths like any one of us. But it isn't the same tired formula. No weak women who always needs rescuing, but Anita also knows her own limits and isn't too stubborn to ask for help when she needs it. The story is well written and thought out as well. You never feel lost, only enthralled.
Anita Blake is a tough, sexy woman who doesn't play the damsel in distress... she kicks butt and doesn't bother to taking names.
Anita earns her living as an "animator", using her necromancy skills to raise the dead for various legal services such as murder investigations, will disputes, or court cases. She is also one of a small number of licensed vampire executioners in the US and is therefore called in to advise the police on supernatural related crimes. Anita's ability to raise the dead is almost a sub-plot in most of the Anita Blake novels. The gory murder scenes and solving the mystery is usually the primary focus.
The Anita Blake books may not be masterpieces of polished writing, but it's a great paranormal procedural. The story is quick paced, action packed, and thrilling to read. The characters really do come to life and you just have to know what happens to them next!
You may have heard that the later Anita Blake books are full of gratuitous erotic sex, but that's not the case in this book. Don't let yourself miss out on a great series! You've got a good 8-10 books until the bed hopping really starts. Until then, enjoy one of the series that helped pioneered the Urban Fantasy genre.

Gruesome/descriptive graphic violence.
Guilty Pleasures is an interesting attempt to blend the hard-boiled detective with gothic mythology. It's not easy for a 105-pound woman to be as tough as a Sam Spade, but Hamilton imbues her with attitude to spare and a touch of vulnerability. At times the first person narrative is a touch forced or hits a wrong note but overall the writing and tone is solid. There is plenty of suspense and action to keep readers on the edge of their seats. The murder mystery is not very well developed and the solution almost seems accidental but this didn't seriously hurt my enjoyment of the story. There weren't any characters here that I'm likely to remember for life but they were solid enough to support the story and Anita's wise guy remarks are pretty funny most of the time.
Guilty Pleasures is well named. It is indeed a guilty pleasure to read it. This book will not win respect from elite literary groups and it won't make you re-evaluate your life, but it will provide several hours of entertainment and that's fine with me. I was looking for a good horror/thriller novel and this fit the bill nicely. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for the same.
