There are number of guitars out there that use new switches, pots, caps etc... and this book doesn't relate to that. Frankly all the new stuff has merit but I have found the older bullet proof designed and sturdily manufactured pieces held together by good soldering works. Open up the access plate to a Epiphone B.B. King Lucille and you will see what I'm talking about. It is a modular maze that could be labled "inner workings and hidden mechanisms" Incredibly complex and impossible to fix without gutting the cavity and replacing with tried and true pots, caps, and switches that are still being produced but are usually sold by companies catering to the vintage crowd.

Anyway... good book but you are not going to see any modular discussion... and why should you? The modular concept is to yank and toss and replace. Vintage/classic part technology actually allowed the user (or tech) to diagnose and replace a piece of the circuit not the whole circuit board. I tend to go with the older technology and keep it simple.

And yes there are brand names used in this book that are not longer around but my goodness... a transducer is a transducer no matter what brand is stamped on it.

This is a very detailed book! I find it to be well organized. I am completely new to guitar electronics, and I am building a DIY Strat kit. While the kit electronics were already soldered in, I needed to change some ground wiring to accommodate the copper shielding on the pickguard and cavity. The detailed section on how potentiometers worked was essential in doing this correctly! I would recommend buying the book "Understanding Wiring" by R.A. Swike also (it has a download link to a color version of the book in PDF format).

However, if you ever plan on wanting to have in depth, ground up information on the electronics of guitars, it's certainly worth it, in my opinion. Things like wiring diagrams can be found online, for free, anyway.

This began life as a ring bound, privately published, amateur publication, and it shows. Brosnac has a good reputation in guitar circles, and there's lots of useful information in the book - somewhere. Unfortunately it is obscured by an atrocious structure, so that descriptions of similar aspects of circuitry are in completely different chapters. It reads more like a scrap book of notes, clippings and articles that the author assembled over several years and then published as-is. It is also very out-of-date, although this matters slightly less because guitar electronics has moved on little, in general, in the thirty years since this was published.
