Traditional hymns, with their resonant melodies, rich harmonic structures and deep messages of faith and inspiration, have been joyfully passed down through the ages. Guitar virtuoso and renowned teacher Pete Huttlinger has taken seven carefully chosen pieces and has arranged them for intermediate fingerstyle guitarists. These beautiful songs of faith can be played in family gatherings, worship services, solo performances or in any other setting. Pete shows you how to find the melody notes, then works through the chord inversions, harmony lines, bass tones and other elements that fill out the instrumental arrangement. Many of these songs are set in dropped D tuning to bring out the sonority of the guitar s bass strings. Each one explores a different feel, from a Travis steady-thumb style tune with jazz-like chords to a gorgeous Celtic melody played in both fingerstyle and flatpick versions. You ll soon be playing stunning arrangements of: I ve Got Peace Like a River; Blessed Assurance; Holy, Holy, Holy; Redeemed; Be Thou My Vision; From Every Stormy Wind That Blows and Abide with Me.

Although not every DVD meant for instruction is taught by someone who possesses the gift of teaching, all of Huttlingers are meant, not to showcase his immense talent, but to instruct. Huttlinger's enthusiasm, however, is unrestrainable.
Huttlinger seems to have a strong memory for what it was like when he studied under a teacher. He has a good sense of humor, somewhat dry and edgy, but is bustling with enthusiasm not only for the music, but for learning. He speaks on a level that is easily understood, and does not pretend to be unimpressed with others (see ALL of his DVDs on John Denver!) who have risen to lofty levels (see his DVD on Gordon Lightfoot). He can gush like a fan, and it is almost impossible not to like him. His attitude towards music is one of great gratitude and his desire to see others learn what he knows is strongly evident.
His choice of songs is terrific and Homespun continues to produce camera angles that are not only superbly instructional, but give that "this is in my living room feel" to it.
I only wish the TAB booklet was in the DVD box. It is on the DVD and must be downloaded and printed. It does not save trees as the student is going to print out his own, and now is left with storage issues. Like other amateur guitarists, I have mounds of print outs everywhere! At least with song booklets, they fit into the DVD case.
But do not let this deter from the professionalism that is Homespun. The only thing better than this would be to have Happy Traum host Pete Huttlinger's teaching, as Happy has done on other DVDs (see my other reviews here at amazon).
