The content was difficult, no question, but the production was outstanding. I will watch it again. It will be easier next time--I know what's coming.
I strongly relate to Jesse, Kelvin Harrison's character, what happens to him and how he deals with it, although part of me is definitely Calvin, deep inside, best as I can keep him bottled up.
The ending was excellent. Jesse finds his way.
Plus, you gotta love Terrence Howard.
People tend to get mad at a movie for being so 'real', but I think that's the problem. Society doesn't want to hear nor see things that may be deeply disturbing, but yet it happens. It happens every day and we need to wake up to the reasons why we see so much violence, anger, depression, pain, etc. everyday, everywhere. I knew while watching this movie that it was based on a true story, without having to have read that beforehand. You can't fake or make up this kind of stuff, it comes from someone who has experienced it.
This movie will move you, make you mad, make you cry (or want to), make you smile, make you think and that's what makes a great movie or story in my opinion. The only downside really is when I saw Amber Heard. She is truly a horrible actress and knowing how awful of a person she is in reality made it that much harder to stomach her. Thankfully, she only has a small part. But you should know that too before watching so it doesn't catch you off as it did me. I only continued watching the movie because I found the story to be something I knew would be worth watching.
I hope everyone of those who watches this movie walks away with a different perspective as to what it really is like to grow up in poverty and what stems from that. If it didn't happen to you, you best thank your Universe every day for that luck of the draw.
