Novella: Gummy Bears and Grenades
Author: Charlie Cochet
Publisher: Amazon Digital
Page Count: 112
Release Date: October 4, 2017
I must apologize to this author. I usually am faster reading and reviewing her books. But my only excuse is Hurricanes got in the way and turned my life around. But , as I say this on paper, my conscience shakes her head and I also must admit it is your fault as well, Ms Cochet!!!
I am on auto buy for your THIRDS series in my head. The Amazon prompt came to me and as I saw it I actually groaned as I hit pre ordered. Just getting thru the horrific trials of Hurricane IRMA, and knowing how much trouble Dex could get involved in, for his bachelor party I was waiting for the shoe to fall…
As I slowly turned each page on my kindle, I held my breath…..thinking the worst, Dex captive again….Dex tortured again, Sloane turning feral……..That after one reading I had to re read the entire thing…..AND ENJOY IT!!!
Oh don’t get me wrong folks, Dex will always get into a mess of trouble, he does here….
But this, his story is more fun and light hearted as well as a bridge to what we can expect with the pair working for TIN.
Ms. Cochet this story was adorable and enlightening. Now we your fans will wait patiently for the next installment!!!!
Breathing a sigh of relief I say 5 Stars
The following may contain what some call spoilers, though things were kept as vague as possible.
Oh, and this book was bought by me because, let's face it, the only things I receive for free would be airplane pretzel packets...if they weren't accounted for within the hidden fees. That reminds me - Dex and Sloane are going to Europe for their honeymoon if all goes well (a big if)... I wonder who would be worse on a plane.
Anyway, the review featuring the good, the bad, and the sexy - not necessarily in that order:
This novella is everything a short story should be and one of the best additions to this series. In other words: it shouldn't be missed!
First off, as much as this is Dex's night, Sloane (sober and sexy, then drunk and adorably bold) and Hudson (drunk and amusing) steal the spotlight. The first half of the book made me laugh so much I may or may not have woken up the rest of the house in the middle of the night (I'm not sorry), whereas the second half had a serious matter or two to deal with.
This short installation may not be necessary to read before "Tried and True" officially, but personal opinion says otherwise. There are some growing concerns and issues brought up by different characters about Dex and Sloane's future job, including underestimating the job in general and their ability to handle it while not hurting each other.
In this novella Sloane not only voices his growing concern about Dex hating his possessive side (also in the sneak peak/teaser chapter), which I wish Dex would've prompted the "I'm yours" later in this short story as another way to reassure Sloane but sadly didn't happen, to Sloane once again trying to get it through Dex's thick skull that sacrificing himself and possibly getting killed isn't a good thing. I really hope Sloane's pleas stick for all subsequent books because, as much as I love Dex, it's getting kind of old and I'm starting to feel a little sorry for Sloane.
Another issue is Dex's naivete. I have to agree with a certain wolf Therian in calling Dex foolish, not only because his decisions are already putting Sloane in danger, but because others are already having to clean up after him. (Besides, Dex is a THIRDS agent - arresting people is still an option.) Now more than ever I think Dex is underestimating stepping into the big leagues. Though I may be worried about how naively he handled things here, I hope Sloane and Dex hit the ground running, take TIN by storm, and prove they're not controllable pawns in someone else's game.
I would've liked to hear the conversation between Dex and Sloane about Dex's talk with Austen about Sparks and the TIN file he read.
Although there are many small inconsistencies and glossed over holes a reader has to ignore in this series it's worth it, and this bachelor party has gotten me psyched for "Tried and True" and every D&S installation afterward.
Added note: I really enjoyed the plausible and not too over the top craziness, like John and his penchant for causing electronics or machines to go Mariah Carey mad on him all the time. John Daley level crazy is too much for everyone but John Daley.
I'm not going to say too much here but I will say that this entry is as all the THIRDS entries are: brilliant and fun. I don't want to give away any of what Dex and his pals face but I will say that I laughed from the first page to the last. Don't get me wrong, the whole series is fun even with all the drama the boys face and most of that is down to Dex's love of all things 80s but there is something special about Gummy Bears & Grenades that is beyond even Dex's 80s fetish. Lets face it, the title alone sets the tone for this tale.
Once again I think "Brilliant" is the only and the best word I can find to describe how much I love these Delta boys, their friends, and family. A huge thank you to Charlie Cochet for creating the THIRDS universe and I can't wait to see what comes next.
I absolutely love Mark Westfield's narration of this series and was so happy Dreamspinner Press decided to release an audio for this fun, funny, sexy, and action packed novella. This hit all the right notes. I loved the dual POV, getting to see Sloane spend one on one time with Tony, and all the bachelor party shenanigans that were so typical of Dex - and everything is terrifically narrated by Westfield.
I had a great time listening to this and am looking even more forward to getting the next book, Tried & True, on audio! ❤
Sloan and Tony were hilarious together and Bamboozled is my new favorite word!
Gummy bears and grenades was a fantastic addition to the THIRDS universe and I can't wait until Tried and True comes out!
