A Good, Basic Resource

This book by Massad Ayoob's is two books in one, Gun Proof Your Children and Handgun Primer. In total the book is 120+ pages and can easily be finished in one evening. While the solutions are a little out of date, I believe it is still a good, basic resource and will at least get you thinking correctly about how to educate your children about guns and safety. Just like you would teach your children how to swim instead of being terrified of water, you should teach your children about firearms and there safe and proper use. He also covers some pro and cons of common security measures to make sure your firearms are properly secured. Unfortunately, his primary solutions are not necessarily the best solutions today. With the availability of cheep mini-safes like the NanoVault, there is no need in most cases to have a $300+ mod installed on your handgun. Still, it is a good resource and gets one thinking in the right direction about guns, family and safety.

The primer is also a good, quick read and clearly explains everything one needs to know about how pistols and semi-autos work and how to handle them properly. It will be required reading for all my children when they are old enough to start practicing with a handgun.

Good for both pro-gun and gun-shy people. Living like an ostrich with your head in the ground won't protect your kids if they happen upon a gun by accident. It can happen anywhere: a park, a home, ect. So treating them like they don't exist is more likely to get your kid injured or killed if they don't know how to identify and behave around firearms and happen across one. For those that do own, it is NEVER too early to teach your kids what to do if they find one unattended, how to behave around one, or how to identify and respect a firearm (not talking about shooting one). Teaching children a healthy respect for firearms may one day save their life.

Mr Ayoob has a lifetime of firearms handling under his belt and writes clearly and concisely without being for or against anyone having a firearm. He simply educates. It is a very short book and flips over for the other text. (GPYC on one side, MAHP on the other). While short it still manages to convey common sense information that sometimes parents who don't deal with firearms or firearms owners who don't always think about how children operate might forget or not know.

"Gun-Proof Your Children! / Massad Ayoob's Handgun Primer" is an excellent starting point for parents looking for good advice on "Gun-Proofing" children. Just pretending guns don't exist in your home or even in the real world is endangering them when they eventually come into contact with one at a friends house or possibly some other location.

This book teaches the parent on how to demystify firearms to naturally curious children and goes above the NRA's Eddie Eagle program message of "Stop, Don't Touch, Leave The Area, and Tell An Adult". We have used the best of both to create our own parent's class on firearm safety that we teach in our small gun shop.

The other side of the book is a handgun primer that those new to pistols will benefit from, but the information is fairly basic.

What every parent should know

In blogs, chats and general conversation from gun enthusiasts and sportsmen, one name keeps reappearing, Massad Ayoob. I own and have read his book, "In The Gravest Extreme: The Role Of The Firearm In Personal Protection", and found it invaluable. When I found this title I immediately ordered it. I have a son who is a year and half old and I was raised around firearms and knew all the rules and how to handle them from an early age, but Ayoob's approach far exceeded that. He tells you how to "Gunproof Your Children" rather than "Childproof Your Gun", a vast difference. He teaches you how show them responsibility and respect for firearms even when you aren't there, or if they are some other child's house when/if the situation arrises. Every parent should read this, regardless if you own a firearm or hate firearms. It is about education, just as if you were to educate them on anything else that may harm them if they were to abuse it. It is a MUST read, not for you, but for your children.

Great author, I have several of his books, This book covers a critical subject. I was rather dissappointed when I opened the package. This is a very thin, short on content book. I would expect for the price the amount of information included would be at least 3 times as rich. I am saddened to give a Massad Ayoob book a low rating. I have learned much from him and can say I have always benefited from his other works. This book has life saving points you need, it just doesn't have enough of them.
