1. Why are some Gunnar glasses more expensive than others? What's the difference?
The difference lies solely in the frame. The lenses are all the same, so you can choose to purchase more expensive ones like these, which are made out of some metallic compound, versus others like Gunnar Intercepts, which appear to be made out of plastic. If you're on a budget I would definitely recommend buying the cheapest ones you can, as long as you like the style, since your eyes will be getting the same thing. For reference, I decided to spend a little more on these cause I got a good deal on them and because I liked the design.
2. Crystalline or Yellow or Dark Gunnar Glasses?
Dark Gunnars confuse me to this day. My understanding is that they are designed for viewing electronics outside when it is sunny. In other words, don't get these. How often do you look at electronics intently outside in the sun when you're not wearing sunglasses? Crystalline vs Yellow is a much harder decision, but Gunnar's recommendation is that Yellow provides the best comfort for the eyes and crystalline is only if you can't stand the yellow or you need to see true color for graphic design or whatnot. I chose Yellow because I prefer things that do one thing great over things that do two things good but not great, such as mountain vs hybrid vs road bikes... but boy is that another debate.
3. Does the magnification make you dizzy?
The magnification did initially make me dizzy. I was about to return them after wearing them for 1 minute but decided to give them a week. After about three days though, I got used to them and have no problem with dizziness. I even walk outside thinking they are my prescription glasses (even though they are yellow!) and then have to go back into the house to get my real glasses.
4. Why get Gunnars when I have F.lux?
I experimented with Flux before I got Gunnars but I was ALWAYS aware of when F.lux was active and when it was not. In other words, the tint on the screen is constantly noticeable for me. However, when wearing Gunnars, your brain adjusts to the filter and the color seems a lot more natural. It's like when you go snowboarding and wear tinted goggles, especially red, after a while your eyes adjust and when you take them off things appear green. On the other hand, F.lux is as if you saw the world red, all the time.
In a nutshell: I love the glasses (5 stars), and I loathe the company (0 stars).
If you can buy Gunnar Optiks Vinyl Full Rim computer glasses without having to interact with Gunnar, like here on Amazon, then do it.
I CANNOT EMPHASIZE ENOUGH HOW THANKFUL I AM FOR THE EFFECT THESE GLASSES HAVE HAD ON MY INSOMNIA.
Without question these glasses have helped me with my eye fatigue and more importantly, they have helped me with my maddening, chronic, health-harming insomnia.
I've been experimenting with the glasses in every way I can think of ever since I got them to make sure I I'm not just experiencing a psychosomatic "placebo effect," and I'm convinced the benefit from these glasses is real.
But wow, I do not recommend any action that would cause you to interact with Gunnars the company.
I originally tried to buy my Gunnars on their website, but had problems with their commerce system the prevented me from ordering. I used their contact form to tell them about it and they never bothered replying. Frustratingly, I did get a canned message saying they noticed I put glasses in my cart but didn't check out so did I need help? I clicked their link and was brought to the very same form I'd already filled out. Thinking, "What the heck," I filled it out again, and again no one got back to me to help me.
After a few days I gave up and looked on Amazon for them and bought them here.
I'll admit that I was skeptical that the Gunnars would do anything anyway. When I got them and eventually came to believe they were legit, I wanted to buy another pair, this time with prescription lens. Unfortunately, I still couldn't get their site to work for me.
Briefly, their site seems to think I have an account already (because I signed up for their newsletter), consequently it won't let me use that email address to register for an account. I don't want to use another email address because that is THE email address I use for buying stuff because of the "spam" that always follows.
This time, instead of using the contact help form I tried their "live chat." Their live chat is barely alive. I saved the chat to remind me in case I lose my mind in the future and decide to try yet again to order prescription glasses from Gunnars. From the timestamps in the conversation, you can see that they frequently made me wait 18 minutes or so before responding all through our conversation.
In the end they said they would send me an email so I could order another way, but they did nothing.
Honestly, Gunnars left me with the distinct impression that they were happy to take customer money provided they never actually had to interact with one.
So, if you want to buy Gunnars on Amazon, I say go for it. They are doing amazing things for me.
However, if you need to get prescription glasses or ever need to interact with the company, I say don't bother.
