Enter the Gunner kennels crate. 'Took a deep breath, ordered it. When it got here my first thought was "oh no, its way too small!" The intermediate is for dogs up to 75 lbs, mine is 45 lbs. for the money I just spent I sort of panicked, called the company, and spoke to them. They reassured me that it was fine, people think the dogs need more room but it's safer if they don't have the space to gain momentum to crash through the sides, hmmm. Made sense, decided to keep it for a week and see.
Reality check: the dog was afraid of it.
Solution: leave it in the living room for a few days, ignore it except to casually chuck a piece of meat or bacon in there and walk away. (Aussies are smart, if you over-focus, they know something's up.) He would grab the meat, and haul out of there. Pretty soon he was going in to sniff around and the rest is history
It's a solid thing. My son helped me carry it to the car. First thing I noticed is that it stays where you put it, has rubber feet, doesn't jiggle around when you drive, went over a speed bump at 20 mph, the thing never moved. The dog loves it now. I think he likes how solid the ride is. And when you close the door, you know it's a solid thing. Clunk, closed. Simple lever for open and close, no fiddling with squeezing a mechanism top and bottom and getting the thing to line up...so easy. Quality, thoughtful construction.
I feel much better about him riding in the van with me. He feels secure. I gave the old crate to our dog trainer who uses them to contain the dogs, not for travel.
Customer service: a real person comes to the phone. They are with you the whole step of the way. Trouble putting it together? Questions? Problem with the door, they sent me a new one (the problem may have been me, they were great about it.). I really like the company and how they do business.
FINAL WORD: get it.
When we brought the kennel in to the house and started keeping our pup in there during the day (because she loves it so much), she got bored and decided that the cutouts in the side looked tasty. Needless to say we ended up with some teeth marks and holes in the "bars" on the side.
I contacted Gunner Kennels directly. They took my name and phone number and said somebody would call be back. Sure enough 30 minutes later I got a call from the owner himself on his personal cell phone number. He told me that he would replace the top half of the kennel free of charge, and would even install a "chew guard" over the bars. Apparently this is a stainless steel plate to deter the heaviest chewers. He said that they would ship it out that day, and would include a return label for me to send the chewed up top half back.
He also told me to contact him if I had any more issues with the kennel so that they could resolve the problem, and try to come up with ways to make the kennels better/tougher than they already are. This is a top notch company, selling a top notch product, with top notch customer service. I would highly recommend Gunner Kennels to anyone and everyone. The price is high, but you'll never have to buy another kennel again!
Pros: better built, sturdy, looks good, insulated, easily cleanable, doesn't need a cover/jacket, triple secured door
Cons: COST, thin plastic, poor space utilization, plastic door, overpriced accessories, poor customer service as of January 17 2015
I first saw this on a Google image search for dog kennel. Looked great and noticed it had been crash tested. Did more research and felt this would fit my needs best: my wife would allow it in the house, she refused a custom metal box, and hunting travel. I contacted gun dog supply and gunner kennel for info to see if it would fit into the quad cab 2015 chevy. Only gun dog supply responded. They tried to help but said they didn't know for sure and provided exact dimensions. Exact measurement provided it should fit, but getting it into the position was unknown given the door angles...
I sought out a local one to test fit. Hollywood feed was kind to answer and allowed this. The kennel would fit if loaded from rear passenger side with the 1/3 bench seat down and sat on the floor of the 2/3 bench seat lifted up. I was ecstatic I could safely house my dog in the cab with me on 10+ hour hunting road trips. He would ride locally in the pickup bed kenneled. I purchased locally with taxes for cheaper than the current ~550$ price on Amazon.
Had it for about 3 weeks. Been doing ok. The design helped shed rain water, so that's a plus. I am not impressed as others with the plastic construction. The flat top surface is flexible. Too flexible. So I went to bass pro shop and felt the ruff tough kennel. The RT kennel's plastic felt thicker. Granted, the g1 is double wall roto molded like a kayak, but a cheaper kayak. My yeti and Jackson kayak are solid and better quality plastic or thickness in my opinion. But again, the design is aesthetically pleasing and the thing was independently crash tested along with double walled. So essentially 2 RT kennels in one...
I cannot speak to ease to assemble as mine was preassembled.
Accessory price gouging is what irks me. 13$ for a metal id plate is steep. And the security add on is too! Odds are if your getting this kennel you know basic skills or have access to a metal shop. Just get some heavy gauge cut yourself. And save 50 plus dollars. I flipped the branding plate over and am getting it engraved locally for less. Also on this accessory note, you can find much higher rated load straps for cheaper.
On a side note: a tip I have is simple para cord 550 weaved through the vents with trucker's loops will secure bumpers to the outside handily.
What I would change/add/wish: window/vent cover accessories, thicker grade plastic/reinforce with baffling, reasonable accessory prices, metal door, metal reinforced vents as a chew deterrent. If priced sub 400$ would be a 4.5-5 star in my opinion. (1y update: added a star, has held up well)
I'll update with pics and other info as needed.
I would buy again, as limited alternatives have more con's.
I purchased at full price and my review is based on my opinion of value.
